Providing a safe learning environment for our young people that gives them room to make mistakes, make better choices and to achieve positive outcomes, as a truly catholic community, is the bedrock of what we do at Shalom. Guidelines and guardrails are a part of that. If we are going to teach effectively, young people need to be clear about both the guidelines and the guardrails. Managing and supporting student behaviour is a big part of our job. We put a lot of time and resource into that. Having ten Heads of House, two Student Welfare staff and an Assistant Principal Student Formation, a Chaplain and three Counsellors, is testament to that. Even with all of that support, sometimes students make poor choices that disappoint both their parents and their teachers. We work hard to support students when they make bad choices. Young people are allowed to fail – sometimes often – but we hope that learnings are made. Sometimes, those learnings are not made in a timely manner. As we get towards the end of this year, my records would show that just over 30 students made a choice to leave Shalom over the course of the year following a series of poor choices. Choices have consequences and for these young people, they decided that the consequences at Shalom were more than they wanted to work through.
Next week is our last week at Shalom. Year 10 & 11 conclude the 2023 school year at the end of this week. A range of activities have been organised for our Year 7-9 students for Monday through to Thursday next week.
Former Australian Iron Man and Australian Survivor Winner, Guy Leech will be at Shalom on Thursday of next week to introduce to our students his ‘Defib Hero’ App. Guy is passionate about teaching people, young and old, about the benefits of knowing how to resuscitate and the use of defibrillator devices. Guy recently presented to Bundaberg Principals and my interest was certainly piqued after the tragedy we experienced at Shalom on the first day of this term with James Kiernan. Guy will present to our students on Thursday afternoon next week on this topic.

Year 11 Exam Block – 22 November – 24 November
Year 11 students will participate in an exam block from 22 - 24 November. Students participating in this exam block will begin Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.
Year 10 End of Semester Two Examinations – 22 November – 24 November
Year 10 students will participate in an exam block from 22 - 24 November. The Year 10 examination timetable is attached. Please note that Year 10 students must attend school up to and including Thursday 23 November. Students are not required to attend school on Friday 25 November although there will be supervision at school provided for those students unable to make alternative arrangements.
Students should expect to sit outstanding examinations and complete other outstanding assessment tasks at the direction of class teachers in any available examination session during the examination block, including the following week if necessary (27/11/23 - 1/12/23).

The Memorial Garden
During House Assembly time last week, the McGarry family joined members of Hogan House, particularly the Hogan 1 PC group, along with friends and staff to plant a tree in memory of Sienna. Father Donald White, our Parish Priest, led a prayer ritual and blessed the tree. It was the coming together of many of the people in our community who knew and cared for Sienna, in a way that will ensure her presence in the College will not be forgotten.
Class Masses
Each Religious Education class is allocated to a Wednesday morning 8am Mass in Loyola Chapel. The class, along with another, co-hosts this Parish Mass by taking the roles of readers and processors. When your student has an upcoming class Mass, you will receive a notification or an invitation to attend. We warmly welcome all to this weekly joint Parish School celebration. The last Year 9 class will be hosting their mass on Weover the next few weeks:

Last week at a ceremony held at the Bundaberg Multiplex, Yangyang L in Year 12 was granted her Australian Citizenship. Yangyang arrived in Australia from Qin Zhou in southern China and was enrolled at Shalom for Year 8, 2019. Yangyang’s first language is Mandarin and during the past five years, she has worked extremely hard to master English and achieves at a very high level across all subjects. Yangyang hopes to go onto tertiary study in the health field in 2024. She has been an active member of our College Chamber String Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra having also undertaken to learn the violin in Year 9. This has been a highlight for Yangyang during her time at Shalom College.
Congratulations Yangyang – we wish you every further success in the years to come!

Duke of Edinburgh's International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an internationally recognised program for young people aged between 14 and 25 years old, building their skills to equip them for life and work.
Taking part in the Award isn’t easy – it requires commitment over time – but it is simple to get started and after all of the time and effort participants put into the program, they will have achieved something special of which they can be very proud.
Participants have the chance to:
• Design their own Award program
• Set goals and record progress
• Make a positive impact on the lives of others through community service
• Learn valuable practical and social skills for career development
• Be challenged by an Adventurous Journey
• Connect with other Award Participants at home and overseas
Although it is a significant commitment, often participants can continue with activities they are already taking part in, such as sports or volunteering, and count these towards achieving their Award. Otherwise, it could be an opportunity to try something new and develop a passion for something different.
In 2024, Shalom College will be looking at running Bronze and Silver awards with adventurous journeys’ for Bronze in Canoeing and Bushwalking for Silver.
In 2023, Shalom College Bronze award students completed an Adventurous Journey in canoeing on the Sunshine Coast. In previous years students have completed awards at other levels (Silver and Gold) and have completed Adventurous Journeys on the South Passage, a sail training ship, while others did a combination of bushwalking and canoeing Adventurous Journeys. In previous years, I have taken students on the Thorsbourne Trail in North Queensland, the Victorian High Plains, and the Kokoda Track in PNG.
Kurt Hahn, the founder of Outward Bound once said, “There is more to us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less”. This is the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh award.

Four Year 11 Shalom students nominated to attend the 2023 Hinkler Innovation Initiative breakfast, with myself, held on 16 November at the Multiplex Sports and Convention Centre.
The theme for the event was ‘Innovation for the Future’ and featured an outstanding panel of speakers including futurist demographer, Simon Keustenmacher and Biomedical Engineer, Dr Jordan Nguyen.
The 2023 Hinkler Innovation Award was also announced at the breakfast with Bundaberg Brewed Drinks taking out this prestigious award.
The four students Steven P, Ella B, Isabel A and Caitlin D thoroughly enjoyed the event and represented Shalom very well on the day by engaging with the presenters after the event to ask questions and thank them for very engaging presentations.

This week we would like to celebrate four quiet achievers in McAuley House. These four young men have volunteered their time to assist both McAuley and Shalom at a number of events throughout the year and they have done so with a positive attitude, dedication and a smile on their face. It is through such acts shown by Jack T, Trey H, Kodee P and Chase S that the true meaning of MERCY is demonstrated. Their positive attitude also SHINES through during PC and House activities and nothing is ever a bother to them as they constantly demonstrate the words of our patron Catherine McAuley in their actions…” There is nothing of greater importance than the perfect discharge of our ordinary duties.”

Basketball
Congratulations to our Year 7 student Pyiper R. This year Pyiper made the Indigenous QLD South U15 Basketball team that played at the National Indigenous Basketball Tournament organised by Indigenous Basketball Australia. That took place In Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast in April.
She was then selected in the U12 QLD school girls team and played at the Nationals in WA in August.
Pyiper was also selected into a QLD FDP 12 month program as a younger age player (future development program) which she attended in September. From this she was selected in a QLD U15 team that will be competing at the Southern Cross Challenge National tournament in Melbourne in January 2024.
She was also selected into a new program called the 'next-gen shooting program'. This is a 12-month program.
Also, after playing Oz-Tag in All schools Pyiper was selected in the Merit QLD team.
She also represented Wide Bay for AFL and Basketball.
Welcome to the HPP.
Her basketball coach, who has been coaching for over 20 years – told me she is the most talented basketball player, he has ever coached.
Congratulations and well done Pyiper.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
Volunteers Required - Markets Tuckshop
We are seeking your help!! We are always in need of new volunteers for the Markets Tuckshop and BBQ.
