Yesterday we celebrated ‘Mothers’ Day’ which is a fantastic recognition of the role wonderful women play in all of our lives. I hope every Mum, Grandmother, Aunt or ‘other’, had a wonderful day. We should celebrate good women in our lives. The images and news we have all watched about the awful incidents of gender-based violence in Australia have been awful. Those things stand in such stark contrast to the celebration of ‘Mothers’ Day’. The vast majority of people and the vast majority of men would never dream of causing harm to someone they love. What part do most of us then play in this? At the very least, awareness. Blokes, mostly, need to be able to challenge their mates when stories come up about treating women with anything less than the utmost respect. Girls need awareness. They need to never buy into the nonsense that would justify poor behaviour from a bloke because, ‘my girlfriend / partner / spouse, made me mad!’ No one else is responsible for my emotional responses other than me! Girls need to run a thousand miles from a boy who would treat them with anything less than respect. Girls need to be ‘aware’ that it is not their job to ‘change’ a boy.
Learner Conferences are scheduled for next Tuesday (21 May) afternoon / evening for Year 9-12. I love seeing lots of parents, with their daughter or son, attending these nights. At the very least, it is a very clear statement to your child about how seriously you take their education. The effectiveness of schooling is directly proportional to how closely and well parents and teachers cooperate. Thank you to all of those who take part.

Attendance for Year 11 Exam Block
As advertised the Year 11 exam block will run from Monday – Wednesday this week. Attendance is compulsory for all students as outlined in our Assessment Policy. This is a timely reminder that students who complete Pathway programs are expected to make the necessary arrangements to ensure they are present at the College for their scheduled exams.
AARA applications can be made for any illness and misadventure issues. Please contact Mrs Allen - Dean of Senior School if an AARA application is required. The process is in the Student Record Book on pages 13 and 15. Please remember as per QCAA Policy and Procedures students are not eligible for AARA for matters that a student/parent can avoid, or for matters of their own choosing e.g., driving lessons/driving tests, family holidays.
Year 12 Results Confirmation
In the coming weeks Year 12 students who study General Subjects will start to receive their confirmed result for their first summative piece of assessment. Class teachers will discuss these with students once they have been released by QCAA to schools. Please remember that all student results are considered provisional until after the quality assurance confirmation process.
Alternate Venue - External Examinations
QCAA expects that all our Year 12 students will sit their scheduled external examinations at Shalom College. These exams run from Monday 21 October – Tuesday 12 November. The exam timetable will be released by QCAA later this term.
If there is any exceptional circumstance as to why your child cannot complete their external exams here at the College, please contact Mrs Norris as soon as possible to discuss this. It is a requirement of QCAA that an alternate venue be identified so that extraordinary arrangements can be made ahead of time. Shalom must apply to QCAA for any variation to venue before 28 June.

Laudato si’ Week
From Monday 20May we will celebrate Laudato Si’ Week by setting challenges that encourage us all to care for our common home – earth. Pope Francis has called for global dialogue in his letter, Laudato si’, that he addressed to ‘every person living on this planet’. Our daily actions and decisions have an impact on the environment, so in week 6 we will be challenged to make better decisions.
House Leaders Badge Ceremony
During the College Assembly last Thursday, the 2024 House Leaders were presented with their badges. While all students in Year 12 are called to be leaders, these students were acknowledged by their peers and staff, as having demonstrated leadership within their PC groups, their Houses, the whole school community and the wider community. We look forward to seeing how their leadership further benefits the college this year, while also providing a legacy into the future.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.

HP Fortis Notebook Battery Update
Some guardians may remember from last year that we had experienced issues with the HP fortis notebook battery. From working with HP through 2023, they have advised that education is different to other markets. All vendors (HP, Dell, Microsoft, etc) are all experimenting with their lithium batteries for longevity. HP like other vendors have removed 20% of their battery life to the end user so it can be used to provide longevity. The reason behind this is most users leave their notebooks on charge on a desk which therefore damages lithium batteries. This was evident during covid while a lot of people worked from home.
From working with HP and their R&D team from USA, they have found from our data that our student notebook batteries are being used correctly and therefore don’t need the 20% battery life taken away. This is due to our school policy that stipulates students cannot charge at School. HP have therefore released a beta software update at the start of 2024 for us to try on some student notebooks which returns the missing 20% battery life. Once they have some data and finish their testing, they will release this update as a production version. We have been testing with several students and have found this has improved their battery experience with the HP fortis notebook.
Unfortunately, this beta software is very difficult to roll out in mass production and the IT team has been experimenting with different methods. From the current tests going on, I’m hoping for a solution very soon so this software update can make it out to all student fortis notebooks.
This has been a long journey to get to this point and I want to thank everyone for their patience.
Notebook ADP vs Warranty vs Intentional Damage
For those who are not aware or have forgotten, our Shalom HP student notebooks are all purchased with ADP (Accidental Damage Protection). ADP allows us to repair up to three notebook parts per calendar year with a processing fee of $60.50 each time a claim is logged.
The warranty allows us to claim manufacture faults on a device. There are no fees associated with a warranty claim.
Accidental Damage Protection avoids excessive out-of-pocket repair or replacement costs caused by accidents such as some drops, spills or electrical surges. HP provides the final decision on whether a device will fall under ADP or not. HP has strongly reminded us that intentional damage does not fall under ADP and therefore will incur the full cost of repair.
Intentional damage is when a student has intentionally or recklessly destroyed or damaged the shalom notebook. HP does not cover intentional damage under ADP and therefore the families will have to pay for the cost of parts and labour. A great example is keys falling off a keyboard. Keys don’t just fall off and the common cause of this is students picking at the keys. A keyboard replacement is over $250.
We always do everything in our power to get the best outcome for Shalom families, however, please understand that whether it’s HP or another brand, the vendor will have the final decision on whether the issue is warranty or ADP. As mentioned in the ICT agreement signed at the start of each year by all guardians, it is up to the school’s discretion as to what repairs need to be performed. This is a good timely reminder to talk with your child/ren about looking after the College notebook as if they transfer to another school, we must pass this notebook onto another student that enrolls at Shalom.

Year 10 Camp Information - Last week
Each Head of House will be looking to develop leadership and teamwork with the students in their own house in each of their Camps. I know they look forward to this time each year.
Reminder that there are no phones on camp for obvious reasons but if students need to check in at home, then the Chaverim phone can be used.
Parents - Please go to Parent Lounge and accept your child’s Camp and update any medical details. We ask parents to do this because we print out each students medical details and put in a folder for each Head of House.

Vicki Wilson Regional Round Wrap-Up
Open Girls & Open Boys Teams – Kylee Johnstone & Nadia Tairawhiti
The Open Girls and Open Boys teams both came third in their respective divisions, the girls winning 4 of their 6 games and the boys winning 5 of their 6 games, but were pipped at the post in gripping semi-final games.
The opportunity for game play and to form connections on court was invaluable and both teams show great promise in their preparation for the QISSN Carnival in June.
Junior Vicki Wilson Team #1 – Melinda Pearson
Apart from being undefeated champions of the Shield division, I would love to highlight that it was a true team effort – every player contributed positively, regardless of the position they were thrust into. Defence wins games and on Friday, the team’s defence throughout the court was sensational and really did set the platform for their success.
Junior Vicki Wilson Team #2 – Nikki Somerfield
The Vicki Wilson Development Team had a fabulous carnival winning all four of their games against other development teams and Vicki Wilson Shield teams. The girls demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, team work and were willing to play out of position to fill spots on the court due to injury. It has been a pleasure to watch the girls come together as a team, take on feedback and implement it on the court and show commitment to training. Thank you to all of the parents that came and supported the girls and scored for us.

The Junior Science Olympiad Exam is designed to take science students in years 7 to 10 to the next level.
• Junior Science Olympiad Years 9 & 10 Wednesday 12 June 2024
• Junior Science Olympiad Years 7 & 8 Friday 14 June 2024
The exam is based on general science content (biology, chemistry and physics) and assumes students have a good knowledge of the Australian Curriculum – Science up to a Year 10 level. Some questions in the exam may also involve higher-level content (such as might be encountered by an extended Year 10 student). A range of analysis questions will also be included for which any necessary extra information is provided.
Exams are two-hours long and are completed all online. Students can only sit one exam level.
All students sitting the same exam must do so at the same time, under normal exam conditions and supervision.
Students will receive a certificate indicating their grade based on their exam performance. Students that perform exceptionally well, and are eligible, may receive invitations to future science extension programs and activities hosted by Australian Science Innovations.
All students who wish to be considered for JSO Spring School and selection on the team representing Australia at the International Junior Science Olympiad must sit our JSO Exam.
