During the holidays I listened to a Podcast on Catholic Schools. A gentleman from the ABC’s ‘Religion & Ethics’ program ran a panel discussion on the topic. He started off by saying that he was surprised that 40% of the students in Australian Catholic schools are not Catholic. The percentage at Shalom is closer to 50%. The discussion revolved around how a school can be Catholic if such a large percentage of the student population is not. One of the panel was a Year 12 student from a Catholic High School in Western Sydney. He was Sikh by Religion but just spoke so well about the values he admired in his school and how respectful he was of the Catholic tradition in the school and how respectful the school was of his faith background and that of many others in his school. The school he came from is in the Parramatta Diocese. The leader of that Diocese is Bishop Vincent Long (who is a legend!). In a separate interview, Bishop Vincent once said, "Our students and families are welcome in our schools not because they are Catholic, but because we are." I hope that, at least by the time that they graduate, all of our young women and men would have a really clear understanding about the Gospel values that make Shalom what it is. We value respect, compassion, integrity, inclusion and justice. All the things that Jesus got crucified for.
Last term, I got an email from a past Shalom student who is a practicing Muslim from a wonderful Muslim family. This student shared with me an interaction had with a fellow Muslim student who had recently graduated from another Catholic school. She described the interaction -
Like me, she immigrated to Australia at a young age and, like me, she had her entire education at catholic schools. Also similar to me, she was the only Muslim student in her cohort of 200+ students. However, I was surprised to hear that her experiences in a catholic school weren't all that positive. While I very excitedly told her about my time at Shalom, she could not relate in the slightest. I was shocked to hear of the constant racism she had faced from her peers and her teachers, as well as the lack of support from the school community. Speaking to her parents, I was told of how discriminative the school was towards her culture and beliefs and just how it was a constant struggle for her to get through high school.
To be honest with you Sir, I think what shocked me most was my reaction to hearing about her experiences. Perhaps what she experienced is the more common scenario and Shalom was the exception for me, or perhaps, I took my time at Shalom for granted. I certainly hope not. What it did do though, is make me realise once again how fortunate I was to be at Shalom and to have had the experiences I've had and to have met the people I've met. I don't think I will ever have the words to express how grateful I am to you and to the Shalom community, for making my time at Shalom so wonderful. I was just so full of gratitude and felt so blessed to think of my experiences at Shalom while I heard of their struggles. So, once again Sir, I say thank you.
I hope everyone of our students has a positive experience of authentic Catholic Education at Shalom. I hope this will be long lasting and will strongly influence them when they make decisions in life and for the education of their own children.
The Shalom Community will extend its support and prayer to the Castro family over coming weeks. Elizabeth Castro, the daughter of Lisa & Antonio and sister to Jonathan, lost a long battle with Cancer last Monday at 40 years of age. Lisa is our Finance Manager at Shalom and a much-loved figure here. Elizabeth was School Captain of Shalom in 2001. On behalf of our Shalom family, I will attend Elizabeth’s funeral in Port Douglas next Friday. Elizabeth was a Police Officer and will be farewelled very well by a very loving family and a grateful QPS.
The new ‘Coolock’ building will commence construction at the end of this month. It will take a few weeks for the Damien block to be demolished. Hopefully, this new addition to the College will be ready for occupation in Semester 2, 2025. Very pleased that local company Murchie Constructions, have won this $12m contract.

The tutoring roster for this term has been uploaded to the College website and is available on SIA. Tutoring commences this week.
Year 10 Personal Futures
Today students attended a briefing for their Personal Futures Day on Friday 19 July. During Personal Futures Day students will spend the day gathering information to assist them in making decisions around Year 11 subject choices to assist their future pathway. It is important that all Year 10 students participate in this day.
Senior School Subject Selection Information Evening – will be held Tuesday 23rd July in the Performing Arts Precinct commencing at 6.30pm.
During the evening there will be presentations on the QCE system and the ATAR. The subject selection process for Year 11 will also be explained. This online process is like that used last year to select Year 10 subjects.
Heads of Department will be available to discuss the variety of subjects on offer and to answer questions you may have. Initial questions such as the content and structure of courses and details of assessment are easily answered by reading the 2025 Senior Subject Selection Guide. This document is available on the College website: https://sites.google.com/view/personal-futures-shalomcollege. It also can be accessed by students in SIA via the Subject Selection Dashboard in the Year 10 Personal Futures page. There is a variety of resources here that students will be using on Personal Futures Day.
SET Plan Interviews will take place on Monday 4 August. This date has been designed a home study day for Year 10 students. Soon parents will receive an email with details about how to book and attend the SET Plan interview with your student.

SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

QISSN and QISSRL Mass
On the last Wednesday of Term 2, the celebration of our morning Mass included a blessing of the playing uniforms as well as the students and staff attending the QISSN and QISSRL competitions. The Mass was presided by Fr Sijo and attended by the large group of students who were preparing for the long journey to Townsville to compete in the holidays.
Catholic Education Week
Celebrated annually in week 3 of term 3, Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all 312 Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos.
As in previous years, we will begin the week with a combined Catholic Schools Mass at Holy Rosary Church on Sunday 21 July at 5.30pm. Everyone is welcome to join in this celebration with our Primary school families and local parishioners.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.

Aldridge State High School hosts an annual Challenge that includes events across all three of these. Year 11 equestrian, Madeline W, and her horse Peppy represented the College at the Challenge in Week 10 of Term 2.
Madeline and Peppy spent three days at the event and competed against students from other schools across the region. They came 2nd in reining, working equitation and mechanical cow and 3rd in presentation and halter class. Well done to Madeline and Peppy on their successes and a huge thank you to her parents who travelled to Maryborough for the three days!

In McAuley House each month each PC celebrates a special MAP – McAuley Awesome Person but we are fortunate enough to also celebrate with our House and School communities a Quiet Achiever. This week we would like to acknowledge Ciara B as our Quiet Achiever. Ciara is a very apt example of a “Quiet Achiever” as she never draws attention to herself but continues to move through each day being constantly aware of others and how they are going. She is always willing to lend a hand or be part of a community or school activity. Ciara is there to chat or support the MA 7 PC members and she always does this with a smile on her face. With her schoolwork Ciara is always applying herself and completing assessment and class tasks with pleasing results. It is through these examples and many others that Ciara in her quiet way demonstrates her true and very much appreciated McAuley MERCY and spirit.

QISSN Campaign Wrap-Up
Our 2024 QISSN campaign has come to an end and has been a massive undertaking for both of our netball teams and all who were involved. We had 4 months of trainings, trial games and the Vicki Wilson Competition, that prepared us well for the 5-day QISSN carnival in Townsville.
Our week away was super busy filled with brilliant netball, fun group activities and creating connections with a great group of Students, Staff and Supporters. We had it all… 14-hour bus rides, laughter, tears, scrapes & tumbles, Vinnies night, screaming, TikToks, forgotten playing shoes, walk-offs, walk-outs, ping pong matches, breath taking views, swimming with crocs, heckling at footy and we topped it all off with an amazing State of Origin experience (thanks to our generous Rugby League Coordinator Mr Adam Booth) ?
It was beautiful to see our Shalom spirit alive and well so far from home and everyone represented Shalom well
Our girls’ team had many highlights and some challenging moments as well, but they played with their hearts on their sleeves and put in a huge effort each and every game making Coach Kylee very proud. They finished 5th place in Division 4 and are hungry to challenge for a higher placing in 2025.
Our boys’ team had some tough competition again this year, they handled the pressure well though and improved with every game they played. Their efforts paid off and they did one better than last year finishing 4th place in Division 1.
At the end of the Carnival we celebrated the following accolades:
- Sienna N and Chase M who were named MVPs for Shalom College.
- Xavier F was selected as Players Player.
- Lincoln L for making the Rising Stars Merit Team.
- Chase M for making the All Stars Merit Team.
We sincerely wish to thank everyone, Sponsors, Families, Staff and Students, for supporting us throughout our QISSN journey this year… it is very much appreciated ❣❣❣
Overall, it was a good campaign and a quality experience for most. Excitingly, Shalom College will be hosting QISSN next year, and this will mark 25 years of QISSN Carnivals since Shalom started the event in 1999, so we look forward to those celebrations.
P.s Parents & family members - if you would like to be involved with the QISSN 2025 Campaign please come and have a chat with me or email me.

Year 11 Biology – CQU University Excursion
On Thursday 13 June the three Year 11 Biology classes undertook a half day excursion to the medical laboratories at CQU. Students had a great time finding out how a research laboratory works. After a very important safety briefing, students donned the correct PPE and undertook an experiment to investigate the effect of Ampicillin and other chemicals on the growth of E Coli bacteria. CQU’s Dr Andrew Fenning, Research Assistant Katy Li and other staff taught students laboratory skills to collect and analyse data. Whilst waiting for results they talked to the students about their very important research on Impacts of Concussion, as well other topics relevant to the student cohort.
I would like to extend a very big thank you to CQU and their staff for allowing the students to get an insight in how biological research works in a real-world situation.
Year 12 Biology – CQU University Excursion
On Friday 14 June the two Year 12 Biology classes undertook a full day excursion to the medical laboratories at CQU. Students had a great time finding out how research laboratories work. After a very important safety briefing, students donned the correct PPE and undertook an experiment to conduct genetic testing on their own DNA, obtained from hair follicles. CQU’s Dr Andrew Fenning, Research Assistant Katy Li and other staff taught students laboratory skills to collect and analyse data. Student used a Polymerase Chain Reaction process to amplify the DNA collected before completing Gel Electrophoresis to separate out DNA fragments for genetic comparison. Whilst waiting for results from these processes, Dr Fenning and his team talked to the students about their very important research on Impacts of Concussion, as well other topics relevant to the student’s learning area of Genetics.
I would like to extend a very big thank you to CQU and their staff for allowing the students to get an insight in how biological research works in a real-world situation.
Bundaberg Mayoral Telstra Innovation Awards
The final presentations for the MTIA were held on Tuesday 18th June. Two Shalom teams participated along with eight other teams from Bundaberg Schools.
The purpose of the MTIA awards is to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, by helping students in the Bundaberg Region unlock their problem-solving potential and take their big technology ideas to the next level.
Students are inspired to be innovative and collaborative throughout the process. They attend seven, two hour mentoring sessions with industry mentors who provide specialist and technical guidance in the areas of marketing, business modelling, finance and legal considerations, customer base and how to pitch their idea to possible investors.
The two Shalom College teams presented two fantastic ideas on the night.
Team 1 – Adaptipal proposed a solution to the issue of loneliness in the elderly. They designed a small robot that would be able to converse with people whilst also challenging them mentally with games and quizzes. The Adaptipal team consisted of Callum Macann, Cameron Windsor and Luke McMahon.
Team 2 – Farm to Fertiliser proposed a solution to the waste from produce farms that is created by produce that is unable to be sent to market. They proposed collecting the produce and turning it into compost that could be sold to major retailers. The Farm to Fertiliser team consisted of Rhys Nissink, Ryder Dobeli and Archer Kewley.
Whilst the Shalom teams did not win they did a great job in their final presentations and I am sure they would all agree that they learnt a lot throughout the entire process over the past three months.
Congratulations to Bundaberg Christian College who won First prize on the night.

Bundaberg Inter-School Debating
The Bundaberg Interschool Debating Competition concluded late in Term 2 and Shalom had two teams compete in the final, doing a wonderful job.
In the Year 9 Division a mixed team of Year 7s and 9s, two of whom stepped up at the last minute, presented the affirmative on the topic: There should be a Universal Basic Income. Hugh M (7), Jessica H (7) and Zara T (9) did an excellent job of their presentations and were ably assisted by Charlotte J (10) who helped to write speeches for the team. Unfortunately, they were defeated by Bundaberg Christian College in a close competition. Jaslyn P (12) and Callum M (11) acted as Chairperson and Timekeeper, ensuring the debate ran smoothly.
Next door in the Year 10 Division a mixed year-level team of Asha D (10), Desilva D (9) and Torah S (8) beat the St Luke’s Year 10 team to bring home the trophy. They were the negative on the same topic (There should be a Universal Basic Income) and did a particularly good job of demolishing the opposition’s argument thanks to a well thought out model and effective and quick-thinking rebuttal.
All the students should be very proud of their efforts. They had a great competition across the term, and everyone improved their skills in writing, presenting and rebutting.
The competition will be back in 2025. In the meantime, Shalom Debate Club will start meetings again in Week 2.
The winning team with their trophy!

A large part of the value of libraries in schools is the opportunities that may arise to engage students in the written word, both reading and writing as well. The Library at Shalom has formed a literary committee with the English faculty to develop such programs that may go some way to achieving this.
We have already had our junior team of expert readers compete in the junior Readers Cup competition and later this month our senior team will have their turn. Right on the tail of that, on Friday 9 August we will celebrate Shaloms ‘First Draft Writer’s Festival’ and Children’s Bookweek. A recent publication of Bundaberg Today featured an article about local oncologist turned successful author, Craig Mulhall. Craig was our opening act at the 2023 First Draft and was a hit. He was able to launch his newly completely first novel; “The King of Rhye”, a tribute to music icon Freddy Mercury and Queen presented as an explosion of fantasy, dark comedy, and unapologetic 1970’s rock.
We are fortunate this year to have been able to secure Craig’s patronage again at our event, this time to close out the day. He has been working tirelessly on his second book, the follow up to the first, this one an ode to pop culture and design borne of the jazz era and very aptly named “Metropolis”.
Events like First Draft and Storyfest (held at Somerset College) provide an excellent opportunity for young people to encounter the people and processes involved in the publishing industry. This year we are extending our festival to include years 7 and 8 in their own mini version in Waterford.

UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF MARY MOTHER OF CHURCH
"The annual parish "Good News" magazine is now available in all churches for a Gold Coin Donation. As you read our in-house publication of the Good News magazine this year, discover the ways in which our parish vision statement is being made clear.
Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to serve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love respectfully, with all people”.
