This week is Catholic Education Week. One of the aspects of this is that our Diocese gives us the opportunity to nominate someone exceptional for the ‘Spirit of Catholic Education’ Award. This goes to someone who embodies what Catholic Education is all about and has done the ‘heavy lifting’ on this over a significant period. There are always a number of nominations across the Diocese with one of those worthy people getting the Award. The Shalom community was very pleased to nominate our Deputy Principal, Elizabeth Austin-Campbell for this Award. Sadly, Elizabeth has decided to conclude her time at Shalom in December this year after a very long career at a number of Catholic Schools. Elizabeth came to Shalom in 2010 as Assistant Principal for Student Well Being. This was a pivotal time in our history as a school, as we had just made the decision to move from having Year Level structured Pastoral Care to a House system. We love what the House system brings to Shalom and I don’t know anyone, in their right mind, would consider going back to what we had. That said, initially, change was not popular. Not only did Elizabeth shepherd in the changes, she led an approach to student well being that was different. She was ready to work with young people and to take into consideration their circumstances and to look at why they made the decisions that they did. She held students, and staff, to higher standards but standards that were rooted in the values of the Gospel rather than a much simpler view of ‘law & order’ issues.
School Fees 2025 & beyond – as has been mentioned previously, the Diocese is significantly reviewing the school fee structure in all of our schools. There will be schools in our Diocese who will see more changes and more significant changes than will Shalom. We already have, largely, an ‘all inclusive fee’. This will take a step forward next year when we include the cost of the school provided laptop. The family rebate for families with children in other Diocesan Catholic schools will also change. The school building fund contribution, which up to now, has been one fee for a family within Catholic Education, will become a levy per student. Overall, we expect that the increase in school fees at Shalom will not rise significantly. The final figure will be confirmed by the Diocese later this year. The payment of school fees is crucial for our survival as a school. We will always work hard to ensure that Shalom is a school, financially accessible, to every family. Please look at the information flyer provided to us by the Diocese:
Shalom College is pleased to partner with The University of Queensland and Queensland Health to conduct The Queensland Child Oral Health Study (QCOHS) 2021-24. This is an opportunity for a free dental check-up at school while helping dental care research in Queensland.
Students aged 12 to 14 years, in grades 7 to 9, will be randomly selected to participate, and families will be asked to fill out an online questionnaire as a part of the process.
The invitation emails will be sent to parents shortly. Your participation in this project is voluntary and you are free to withdraw from the research at any time.
If you would like your child to participate in the study, please follow the links in the invitation email to complete the consent form and online questionnaire. The research team will be in contact with you to confirm when the dental check-ups will occur.

Year 10 Personal Futures
On Friday students participated in their Personal Futures Day. All students received a copy of the SET Plan Form (green A3 sheet). Each student must have a SET Plan in place as they move into Year 11. If your student was absent on Friday, they will need to collect their SET Plan Form from Student Reception as soon as possible. It is important that students do not lose this form.
This week Mr Maher will email Year 10 students the link and their unique code to access the WebChoice platform. Without this they will not be able to complete the online subject selection process. Please check that your student has received this email. It may be advisable for them to clear their email inbox to ensure they receive this important email.
2024 Senior School Subject Selection Information Evening -
will be held Tuesday 23 July in the Performing Arts Precinct commencing at 6.30pm.
During the evening there will be presentations on the new QCE and ATAR systems. As well as an explanation of the online subject selection process for Year 11. The process is like that used last year for Year 10 subject selections using the online portal (WebChoice). This portal will open on Tuesday 23 July.
After the presentations Heads of Department will be available in the foyer to discuss the various subjects on offer and answer questions that parents may have. Initial questions such as the content and structure of courses, contributing QCE credits and details of assessment can be answered by reading the 2025 Senior Subject Selection Guide. This document is available on the College website: https://sites.google.com/view/personal-futures-shalomcollege. Students can access all the Personal Futures resources in SIA by accessing their Subject Selection Dashboard and then select the Year 10 Personal Futures page.
If parents are unable to make this evening, the presentation slides will be available on the website and in SIA Wednesday.
SET Plan Interviews
These will take place all day on Monday 5 August. This will be a ‘work from home’ day for all Year 10 students. No Year 10 classes will run this day. Students can access any required class work through their SIA class page.
Parents were emailed information on Friday about how to book your child’s SET Plan interview and where it will take place. Please note students will need to bring their completed SET Plan Form (green A3 sheet), their laptop and the WebChoice information emailed to them. This will allow the SET Plan and online subject selection process to be finalised and submitted at the interview.

Year 7-10 End of Semester One Report Cards Published
Year 7-10 End of Semester 1 report cards were published via Sia on Friday 19 July. Report cards will be available for parents through Sia > Parent Lounge > Academic Reports. More specific information about individual assessment items may be viewed through Sia > My Students.
Students can access their reports via Sia > Services & Support > Applications > Student Café.
Please note that in 2024, only an overall grade for each subject studied will be reported. The Behaviour and Application feedback is now given through Sia > Learner Attributes. This method of reporting the Learner Attributes is more detailed and ‘live’, improving the communication with students and parents.
If you have any questions about assessment results, please contact the relevant classroom teacher. For any other enquiries, feel free to contact me maherb@shalomcollege.com .
SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

ACTS Camp
On Wednesday 10 to Friday 12 July, 12 year 11 students attended ACTS camp at Yeppoon with 7 other catholic schools from all around the Rockhampton Diocese. ACTS stands for A Chance To Serve, here’s what the students have to say about their experiences.
- I take away from ACTS camp the new bonds I’ve made with people from Bundaberg all the way to Mackay, the memories I’ve created that will forever be some of my favourites, the new leadership skills I’ve learned and what I may need to improve on. ACTS camp wasn’t all about leadership and friendships it was also about finding your inner best self and I have most definitely done just that. I have formed into a new better person just from the three days spent at ACTS. - Chelsea L
- The memories, the lessons, and the newfound friendships. - Michaela R
- The opportunity to grow as a person and make so many new friends from around the diocese. - Chloe G
- The opportunities to meet likeminded individuals we wouldn’t meet otherwise. -Callum M
- I’ve had a good experience at ACTS camp. I’ve met new people I can call friends, improve my social skills and learnt more about leadership. - Christian A
- The opportunity it gave me to grow as an individual and within a group of other individuals with similar views as me. - Jazmyn M
- Love, love and love. No.1 rule take all your opportunities. I didn’t know what to think of this camp but when I left, I left with a little uneasy feeling in my chest. Everyone there was so likeminded, open and kind if only the world was like that. I made so many new friendships and I hope they prosper. I wish everyone could experience this, it changed me, I became much more confident and accepting. Thanks to Dave and Mrs. Petersen and all the other staff who made it possible for us. - Chris. S
- I definitely did not expect ACTS camp to be as good as it was. The lessons taught had a profound impact on all of us and will serve us for many years to come. I’ve only known these people for a couple of days, and it feels like years. 10/10. - George. S
- ACTS camp allowed me to develop stronger bonds with my friends and meet new lifelong friends. The lessons learned will be with us forever. – Zoe W
- ACTS camp made me feel myself again. I learnt valuable lessons from others and more about myself. It was an amazing opportunity and I’m blessed to have experienced ACTS camp. – Amelia N
- This experience provoked a sense of community and belonging. Having such likeminded people all of which sharing the same goal, made feeling vulnerable easier. The activities during the camp developed my confidence, understanding of people, and awareness of people’s personal issues that they may not make apparent. Thank you Dave - Landa. A
Wow! The students loved it, they left with a sad smile, happy for the new lessons, developments and friendships but sad they’re leaving it behind. However, the values taught are carried through them into our Shalom College community and everyone they meet.

Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Year 9 and 10 students.
Wednesday 24 July Mrs O'Driscoll's RE 10I + 9D
Wednesday 31 July Ms Glasspool's RE 9A, B + J

Rugby League Confraternity Shield 2024
Shalom College Player Awards and Recognition
- Joseph D, and Bella B who were named MVPs for their respective teams.
- Ryan C, and Hannah R who were named team Spirit awards recipients.
- Player of the match awards: Bella B, Michaela R, Rhani D, Zoe S.
- Player of the match awards: Joe D won 4 POM, Coen D, Billy M.
- QISSRL Girls QLD Merit team selection: Asha H.
Confraternity Shield Rugby League 2024 has concluded for both our boys’ and girls’ teams. Preparations began well before our first game, with students starting their training in early November 2023, putting in the work long before a ball was kicked. Both teams entered Confro 2024 with strong performances in their final lead-up Dolphins Cup games, giving the coaching staff quiet confidence in their ability to compete well.
Our journey commenced early Saturday morning with a 14-hour bus trip up the M1 to Townsville, finally arriving at the Mercure Townsville late on Saturday night, a bit weary-eyed with stiff legs and tight backs. Sunday morning saw our teams head down to The Strand for a walk and stretch, enjoying the beautiful backdrop of Magnetic Island.
Sunday afternoon was the official opening ceremony held at Ignatius Park College, with our team captains, Joseph D and Tenamo A, representing Shalom College in presenting our jerseys for the blessing for the carnival ahead.
Tenamo & Joseph
Our First XIII Girls had a consistent carnival, with a win, a draw, and two close, hard-fought losses against quality opposition, including a narrow 10-4 defeat to the eventual champions. They finished the carnival in 6th position in Division 1, our highest placing for our girls’ teams at Confro. The girls competed hard and were in every game they played, showing great courage, effort, and resilience to back up after each match. It was wonderful to see our girls compete against some of the top schools, demonstrating that their hard work is starting to pay off.
The First XIII Boys faced tough opponents in their Division 1 pool and needed to win 2 of their 3 pool games to progress to the quarter finals. Unfortunately, they fell short, winning 1 out of 3 in their opening pool games, going down in a tough game against Marymount College, followed by a defeat to eventual champions Ignatius Park. Our boys went on to win against St Edmunds but dropped their next two games, finishing in 12th position in Division 1 with record of 2 wins and 4 losses.
While the results were not what we had hoped for, the boys prepared well for each game but just didn’t play to their potential. With a relatively young squad, they will gain invaluable experiences from the carnival, which will hopefully hold them in good stead for the future ahead.
I would like to thank all students for making a commitment to play rugby league at Shalom College, we are very grateful to have you on board and you are now a part of Shalom College history as representing Shalom at Confro 2024.
A massive thank you to all parents and caregivers for your time, support, and dedication in giving your children the opportunity to be part of our rugby league program.
To all rugby league staff, I can't thank you enough for the time and effort you have put in over the past nine months. Your dedication and passion in building a strong foundation and culture for our students to flourish both on and off the field is something you should all be proud of.
Thank you to all teachers, admin, and support staff for your assistance, patience, and support in providing workarounds for our students to enjoy the game of rugby league.
Finally, thank you to Mr McMahon and Mr Gills for your support and for providing a pathway for students to play rugby league at the Confraternity Shield carnivals.
Thank you to our amazing sponsors for your generous support, which helps us provide our students with great resources to have a wonderful week.

Term 3 began with a multi-day excursion for three of our Year 11 Accounting and Business students. Jade, Jonah and Tyler attended the ECOMAN workshop hosted by Wealth Managers, Ulton at their Bundaberg offices.
The ECOMAN program is run by Queensland Private Enterprise Centre (QPEC) which links school education with the business world by providing workshops for students to manage a “real” business through the phases of the business cycle. Students integrate the different operational sections of business - including human resources, inventory management, production, management and financial accounting, and marketing – to maximise shareholder wealth over a period of continuous improvement. The three-days culminate in a presentation by all schools to Ulton partners and managers, and guest business specialist, Wade James. Mr James also provided an inspiring presentation to all of the students outlining his pathway from school leaver to successful business owner and manager.
Tyler, Jade and Jonah gave a very professional final presentation summarising the strategies and results of their various management positions over the three days. Well done to these students for participating and for representing Shalom College so professionally. We are also very grateful to QPEC and Ulton who kindly sponsor this important program every year.

What are these authors saying about libraries?
"Every school needs a school library—it’s a no-brainer. Reading underlies every area of the curriculum and the key is having a well-stocked school library and a passionate school librarian who can put the right book into the right hands at the right time."
- Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton
“Under the bold leadership of teacher-librarians, they [libraries] are spaces where stories are championed and imagination is prized, but more than that, they are spaces where students feel safe to be themselves. As somebody who came out as gay in his mid-twenties, stepping into inclusive library spaces where teenagers are given the freedom to express themselves wholly, without judgement, is like something out a dream. Schools’ attitudes towards their LGBTAQIA+ students have changed rapidly since I graduated, and time and again, I’m reminded that it is the school librarians who are driving this change.”
- Will Kostakis
“Some schools no longer have teacher-librarians and, the more I see of teacher-librarians, the less sense that makes to me. What’s next? No teachers? Kids turning up to the classroom each morning and inventing the day ahead? Maybe there’s a note on the door about what the curriculum has in mind, maybe there isn’t …
As an author who has made hundreds of school visits across all Australian states and territories (and several other countries), I’m often struck by the difference well-resourced teacher-librarians make.”
- Nick Earls - Author
“Libraries are treasure troves of knowledge, wisdom, imagination, emotion.... “
- John Marsden - Author
“Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve and contribute to improving our quality of life.”
- Sidney Sheldon
“When in doubt, go to the library.”
- J. K. Rowling
“Libraries were full of ideas – perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons”
- Sarah J. Maas
“…this is where the library is terrific,’ he continues. ‘I’ve visited a few schools where they have one hour a week where kids come into the library, and they can sit, read, draw, write poetry — it’s their time. And the teachers say that it’s fantastic. The teachers can be in there, and the librarian quietly wanders around, directing where needed. It serves a pastoral function, which is really important for kids and their sense of self-worth.” …. “I am absolutely convinced about the need for and the value of school libraries and school librarians.”

Volunteers Required - Markets Tuckshop
We are seeking your help!! We are always in need of new volunteers for the Markets Tuckshop and BBQ. If your child/children would like to gain some work experience, why not get them to volunteer in the canteen. If you have a few hours you could spare to assist in our canteen, please click on the link below to register your assistance or contact Leanne via email at barkerl@shalomcollege.com.
If we get enough volunteers, it may work out that you only need to volunteer once per term.

UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF MARY MOTHER OF CHURCH
"The annual parish "Good News" magazine is now available in all churches for a Gold Coin Donation. As you read our in-house publication of the Good News magazine this year, discover the ways in which our parish vision statement is being made clear.
Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to serve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love respectfully, with all people”.
