Christmas lights are adorning houses everywhere and another huge round of retail marketing is underway around the nation and the world. Who doesn’t love Christmas? Calvin’s friend, Hobbes, might give all of us a reason to pause a moment before we drown in the commercialism of the season. As we get towards the end of another year, for what are and should we, be grateful? 2024 has brought its share of loss and difficulty but there has also been plenty of love and resilience. Be grateful. Jesus was born into the world as a promise of hope, justice and a much better world. Our job is to do our part to make that happen. Every blessing of the season to all.
We farewell a number of staff from Shalom at the end of this year. I have said and written previously about the profound impact Ms Elizabeth Austin-Campbell has had on the College and she will be missed. Joining her moving on to new ventures will be:
Ms Jo-Anne Thomson, Ms Larissa Scoles, Mr Sean Udal, Ms Camilla Cook, Ms Katie Campbell, Mr Ian Jenner, Mr Steve Tucker and Ms Colleen McDade-Broer.
We also bid farewell to some wonderful Support Staff in Ms Femia Eizema, Mr Rod Silcox, Ms Keeley O’Mara, Ms Eloise O’Driscoll and Mr Michael Bundesen.
And we wish every success in their next phase to our wonderful ‘Gappies’ of 2024: Rebecca Bond, Mia Cameron, Pat Connolly, Paige Davis, Oliver Jansen, Kaitlyn Johnson, Emily Olive-Coleman, Eloise Ray, Elissa Shears, Nate Sologenkin, Paige Winzer & Candace Walsh.

A passionate member of our Dance program, Summer has excelled as part of the Dance Star performance team, performing at both regional and state finals, and captivating audiences as a Gala Showcase performer. Beyond her dancing talents, Summer embodies the spirit of service, volunteering as a tour guide on Open Day and regularly attending Wednesday morning Mass.
With her kind demeanour and ever-bright smile, Summer is a true role model for her peers. Congratulations, Summer, on your remarkable achievements this year!

Gracehaven Christmas Concert 26 November
On Tuesday 26 November, students volunteered to sing, tell jokes and play guitar to entertain the residents at Gracehaven Village. Only after 1 day of practice, students presented a fabulous concert and brought Christmas cheer to the 48 residents who joined us. Residents joined in the carols and thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the interactive Christmas story. Students went all out dressing up in their bright Christmas colours and sang and played their hearts out.
Thank you to the students who volunteered and the wonderful Mrs. Vanessa Holloway for working with her guitar ensemble crew who sounded fabulous!
If all you have is kindness to give, then give it generously and make the spirit of Christmas a tangible gift!
Gracehaven Christmas Party 28 November
Our final SCASA afternoon visiting residents at Gracehaven Retirement village concluded on Thursday afternoon, 28 November, with a Christmas afternoon tea party. After weeks of making Christmas crafts together, sharing stories and building on their friendships, residents and students had an opportunity to simply enjoy each other’s company whilst munching on delicious cupcakes and cookies. Residents were showered with gifts made from Junior RE classes and our fabulous crew of Can-Do students received their own surprise gifts from Gracehaven as a thank you for their volunteer work. The entire experience has been fun and rewarding for both students and residents.
Thank you to Kim Hainsworth at Gracehaven for helping us arrange these visits each term, and for our wonderful Shalom volunteers who drive the bus so we can visit our new friends (David Bond, Anthony Aplin, Megan Hoban and Peter Robinson).

Merry Mixed-Up Christmas!
Junior RE classes have been working on recreating the nativity scene in different eras and locations. The challenge was to for students to research what each detail of the nativity story represented: shepherds looked after vulnerable animals who couldn’t defend themselves, wise men represented scholars with deep spiritual connections, the stable and manger meant Jesus was born in lowly circumstances which were in direct contrast to his royal bloodline and birth as God in human form. Students worked in teams to reimagine the role of each aspect of Jesus birth and the symbolism behind each detail in a variety of new situations. Students then had to determine what outfits they would each wear and a background image that represented their time and place.
Some of the very creative and well-thought-out scenes included modern Australia with the current housing crisis as a backdrop, and an Aussie farmer as the shepherd. Another group thought SES workers during the Bundaberg floods represented shepherds because they look after vulnerable members of the community when they can’t help themselves and they staged their ‘stable’ on a flooded roof. Joseph was often represented as a tradie in reference to Joseph’s skills as a carpenter.
Our schools talented photographer Candace captured the students nativity scenes in both silhouette and light, creating a visual smorgasbord of Jesus' birth as being timeless and relevant to every generation.
Shalom Solidarity
Year 8 classes tackled big social justice issues in Religion classes this term beginning with a look at racism at our school. After Ms. Mitchelson’s informative presentation on Assembly in Term 4 students found themselves aware of issues at our school that they can personally help address by working together in solidarity to make positive change. As part of their assignment students were given the opportunity to creatively present information about the issue of racism. The work that students produced from their own perspectives was confronting, saddening, insightful and hopeful all mixed in together.

Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to serve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love respectfully, with all people”.
