NAPLAN 2025
Year 7 and Year 9 NAPLAN data was recently released to schools. We have been analysing our data to find our strength areas and any areas of weakness that can be addressed. Pleasingly, our school data is above the state in a number of areas across Years 7 and 9.
Individual NAPLAN student reports have been sent out to families via Australia Post. On the front page is an explanation on how to read the report. We encourage you to have a conversation with your student about their results. Further information on the NAPLAN individual reports can be found here:
https://nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/naplan/isr-parent-carer-faq
Just a reminder that student results are now assessed in four proficiency levels:
Exceeding: The result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
Strong: The result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
Developing: The results indicate that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
Needs additional support: The results indicate that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
National NAPLAN Results
Latest findings from the 2025 NAPLAN National Results show that performance is broadly stable at a national level, with 2 out of 3 students at the “Strong” or “Exceeding” proficiency level for their reading, numeracy and writing skills, and one in 10 students at the “Needs additional support” level across all year groups and domains.
The findings also show that participation rates across all years and domains have rebounded to pre-COVID levels, reaching 93.8% – the highest level since 2017.
Encouragingly, the NAPLAN National Results indicate higher NAPLAN scores on average across Years 5, 7 and 9 in numeracy, particularly among stronger students, as well as a reportable increase, from 2023 to 2025, in the percentage of Indigenous students achieving “Exceeding” in writing and numeracy at both Years 7 and 9.
Year 9 and Year 10 subject selections for 2026
The Year 9 & 10 Subject Selection Booklet for 2026 will be released to students this week. An email will be sent to all Year 8 and Year 9 students advising them of this and where they can locate the information booklet.
Year 9 and Year 10 Subject Selection Evening – Tuesday 19 August
The information session for students and parents of Year 8 students selecting subject choices for Year 9, in 2026 will commence at 6.30pm. The information session for students and parents of Year 9 students selecting subject choices for Year 10 in 2026 will commence at 7pm. This will be held in the PAP Theatre.
Both presentations are short information sessions covering the subject selection process and platform we use to make subject choices online. They will also cover information about the number of Core and Elective subjects’ students are required to study, and where to access information about the subjects offered at each year level.
There will be no specific subject information given on each of the different subjects available to study because of the sheer volume on offer. This information is available in the Subject Selection Book. Heads of Department will be available on the night to address any questions you may have regarding the selection of subjects to study.
The timeline around the Year 9 and Year 10 subject selections are as follows:
13 August - Release of Subject Selection Booklet online
19 August - Edval WebChoice portal opens for students to select subjects
19 August - Parent Information Evening
29 August - Signed Edval WebChoice receipt to be handed in to Student Reception

The second round of Yr 7/8 Core Studies Learner Conferences will be conducted in the Waterford Centre from 8:30am to 3:00pm on Friday 5th September 2025 (Student Free Day). Interviews will be of ten minutes duration. The rooms the interviews will take place in on this day are below.
Please note that Kaylah Fox and Bree Broadhurst will interview together (ie parents can only book with Bree but Kaylah is present as well). Megan Munckton will be on long service leave and will be unavailable.
Learner Conferences will open for parent bookings through via your laptop Sia > Parent Lounge > PT Interviews or via the Shalom App > Links/Contacts > Links > Parent Lounge > PT Interviews at 8:00am on Monday 25 August and close at 3:00pm on Monday 1 September to allow teachers time to review and prepare for interviews.
Please review the wealth of information about your child’s progress available on Sia before attending these interviews. Your child is encouraged to attend the interview with you.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Learner Attributes
Throughout Week 6 (18 – 22 August), teachers will give feedback through Sia on the learning behaviours of students in each of their classes, as well as PC classes.
Each student will be awarded either an Excellent (5), Good (4), Sound (3), Improvement Needed (2), or Poor (1) in the following criteria:
• Organisation - punctual to class, correct equipment in good working order (academic only), laptop charged (academic only), record book present
• Application - actively engaged in learning/PC activities, appropriate use of technology (laptop, phone etc), homework complete (academic only)
• Presentation - uniform worn appropriately, follows school guidelines for hair, make-up, jewellery etc
• College Values - treats others with dignity and respect, displays a positive attitude, exhibits appropriate behaviour
This will appear on Sia Parent Dashboard under ‘Grades’.
and will appear as a mark out of 20.
More detailed information can be found by clicking on the ‘Learning Attributes – Semester 1’ link on the above screen.
After the initial feedback is published, teachers are able to update these criteria and re-publish them to parents at any time throughout the year and add a comment if necessary. Parents are advised of updates via Notifications in Sia. In this way, reporting on your child’s application in class is ‘live’, improving the quality of feedback for parents. We believe this is a significant improvement in our communication with parents, compared with the previous ‘point-in-time’ reporting.
If you have any questions about your feedback, please contact the classroom teacher. For questions about the Learning Attributes process, please contact me. Brendan Maher Assistant Principal – Administration.

Lawn Bowls
Congratulations to Shalom student Phoebie R who was part of the QLD team that competed at the recent School Sport Lawn Bowls Championships that was held at Pine Rivers. Phoebie and her QLD team brought home the bronze. Phoebie is currently in Melbourne competing in the Tri - Series against VIC & NSW.
Football
Congratulations to Riley F who represented the 10-12yrs Wide Bay Boys Football team at the recent State Championships in Brisbane.
Netball
Tenne B and Rakaia K recently competed at the School Sports Australia National Carnival representing Queensland in U15 Girls Netball. 3 days of solid training and 6 days of National Competition saw the QLD Team finish in 5th place overall with 3 wins 3 losses and 1 draw. An awesome achievement girls!!!!

Athletics
A few more Athletics records were set after last weeks Bundy District Carnival.
To set a new SHALOM record, the students must finish 1st at District, Regionals or States and obviously beat the current Shalom record.
The following records were set after the BDSSS Carnival
Girls 12yrs 800m Atlanta D (Rice) ran 2:41.28 breaking her own record set from the Shalom Athletics Carnival this year of 2:45.44
Girls 14yrs 1500m Elise V (Damien) ran 5:12.16 to break the old record from 2002 of 5:23.19 ran by T Faulkner
Girls 14yrs 3000m Elise V (Damien) ran 11:08.54 to break the old record from 1992 of 12:00.24 by S-J Redshaw
Girls 12yrs LJ Corle G (Hogan) jumper 4.04m to break the old record from 2022 of 3.96m by Mackenzie W (Lingiari)
Karting
Shalom student Ky B has been a busy young man - two weekends, two countries.
IAME Series Asia Rd 5, Thailand.
Overall a good weekend for Ky staying in the top 3 for all races but one. Ky had awesome pace and in the final he was only 0.4 seconds off from taking the win. Many positives to take from last weekend and he can build on it to progress further, coming into the final round of the championship. He is in a good position to podium, for the championship.
Race results:
Qualifying: P3
Heat 1: P3
Heat 2: P4
Super Heat: P3
Final: P3
Thanks to Patrizicorse, MG Engines and Trent for all your help and horsepower.

Australian Kart Championship Rd4, Ipswich QLD.
Ky had the pace all weekend and put it altogether for the final. He didn't have a great qualifying but was able to quickly climb the ranks to finish 4th for the weekend. Going into the last round of the championship Ky is sitting in 3rd.
Qualifying: P17
Heat 1: P6
Heat 2: P3
Heat 3: P5
Heat 4: P2
Final: P4
This would not be at all possible without his trusting mechanic, his dad, Cian from Calicorse, Mick from MG Engines and Michael from Patrizicorse.
Surf Life Saving
Congratulations to Shalom student Harriet M on her recent nomination for Youth Surf Lifesaver of the Year. This is a State wide nomination as part of the Awards of Excellence for Surf Life Saving Queensland. Good luck Harriet!!!
Rugby League
Shalom College will chase an historic first Dolphins competition title when they meet Rockhampton Grammar School in the Year 10 Challenge Cup Grand Final in Rockhampton on Tuesday 19 August after an epic 10-8 Semi-final victory over The Cathedral College (TCC), also in the Beef City, this week.
Shalom has maintained their perfect record in the Challenge with a last-round 30-18 away triumph over Rockhampton Grammar School a week earlier when Lachlan R amassed 14 points with one try and five conversions from as many attempts.
Kobey W set up the try which sealed the match in another robust team performance for Shalom in the Challenge last round, while Lachlan R scored their first try in the Semi and also converted after hooker Hudson McK put the icing on an outstanding all-round performance when he scored under the posts while they were down 8-4 with 10 minutes to go, and Lachlan R added the extras.
Powerhouse front rower Thomas DL also had a whale of a game.
Shalom had beaten TCC 28-0 in the second round but our coach Mr Bailey-Rasmussen said they were full-strength in the Semi after missing nine players through injuries in their round clash, and TCC engaged in a pulsating end-to-end duel this time.
“We played the last eight minutes with 12 players after having a player sin-binned, but we scrambled really well, but it will be another tough game in the Grand Final, again against Rocky Grammar, after they upset St Brendan’s College Yeppoon in their Semi-final,” Mr Bailey-Rasmussen.
Mr Bailey-Rasmussen said his team will be aiming to go one better after Shalom lost the Challenge decider to Emmaus College Rockhampton two years ago.
Shalom’s Open Boys and Girls each face tough Semi-final showdowns in Rockhampton on Tuesday after both losing their Cup last round games against Rocky Grammar 32-18 and 16-6 respectively last week.
Shalom Girls coach Mr Tuima said their clash with Rocky Grammar “was an early arm wrestle with both teams going set for set”. “However, some ill-discipline saw our fullback Charlie G sent for 10 minutes in the sin bin. The squad however stepped up to the challenge and continued to shut down Rocky Grammar’s waves of attacks. The girls managed to hold them at bay the entire 10 minutes,” Mr Tuima said “Unfortunately, a lapse in defence down our right edge, let in a soft try right on the half-time hooter, for a 6-nil lead to Grammar at the break.
“In the second half, our Shalom girls started hot, camped deep in their half, when finally, hooker Sarah A scooted from dummy half to dive over for our first points.
“A short time later, a soft penalty to Grammar saw them reply right next to the sticks to then lead 12-6. With momentum now in their favour and with Shalom only bringing 14 players, meaning only one on the bench, it was a matter of time when fatigue would set in.
“I was pleased with the girls’ efforts, especially being a player down early - they managed to hang around and compete. Unfortunately, our unforced errors hurt us when we didn't convert our opportunities.”
Meanwhile, winger Coen D continued his scoring spree for our Open Boys with a double, but coach Mr Kaufusi said hooker Tahj C was among their best, along with inspirational captain and front rower Riley M, and Dante H “on the edges”.
“Rocky Grammar got the jump on us – they kept the ball alive, which tested our defence, and they got a few favourable calls, and we had to play catch-up footy – we fought well in the second half but it was too late,” Mr Kaufusi said.
Shalom will meet St Brendan’s in the 1v4 Semi-final, and Mr Kaufusi said “we will have to be on our game from the start” after competitive losses to them in our two clashes so far this year – in the Cup first round 24-12, and Confraternity Shield Quarter-finals 12-0 respectively.

The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is an award program which recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. The 'goal posts' for all our students are different, however all students are capable of achieving their own success targets. There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers.
RYDA - National Road Safety Program
RYDA is a National Road Safety education program for youth in Australia. It provides youth with the skills and strategies they need to stay safe on the roads.
The RYDA workshop features highly engaging practical demonstrations, real-life narratives, videos, quizzes and interactive role play. The RYDA approach supports youth development in a number of areas including social resilience and anticipating and managing risk. Created for senior high schools, RYDA gives students a unique opportunity to set road safety goals and build strategies alongside the friends they will most likely be riding with, as drivers or passengers. At the workshop, students attend six interactive sessions at a dedicated venue over the course of a school day. Back in the classroom, we give teachers everything they need to continue the learning throughout the school year.

Quota Student of the Year Quest
On Saturday 2 August, three year 12 Shalom students participated in the Quota Student of the Year Quest.
Matilda H, Hannah L and Ava M, along with students from other schools around Wide Bay, were separately interviewed by a panel of judges during the morning session.
In the afternoon, they each gave a 4-minute speech on their chosen topics in front of the other students and their guests. The students were judged around their portrayal of leadership qualities, personality, sporting interests, public speaking and good citizenship.
While the Shalom students didn’t receive an official placing at this competition, they all certainly represented our College with confidence and dignity and they should all be proud of their participation. It was a pleasure to listen to the passionate delivery of speeches from all the local students in the Wide Bay area – the future is in great hands!
Junior Science Olympiad Result
In June, three Shalom students participated in the Junior Science Olympiad. The Olympiad is a 2 hour exam covering Biology, Chemistry, Earth and environmental Science, and Physics.
Two students achieved a participation award.
A third student, Connor P - Year 10, received a Distinction Award placing him in the top 30% of participants. Connor was also invited to participate in the Junior Science Olympiad Talent Development Program. This extracurricular program helps students to develop their expertise in all four sciences in the company of like-minded peers, and it is an honour to be invited to participate. Congratulations Connor.

On Friday 1 August the Shalom Year 9/10 Readers Cup team participated in a tough but thrilling test of knowledge on four novels in the Wide Bay Readers Cup Competition.
The girls were amazing with their depth of knowledge and at the end of the five rounds Shalom and St Luke's went to a tie breaker for an unknown top spot. St Luke's prevailed by the closest of margins and Shalom came away with an incredible 3rd place.
The girls prepared so well.
The team of Desilva D, Matanah L, Georgia H, Chelsea C, Olivia C and Eloise W represented Shalom splendidly. We had six students prepare, however only five could go due to number restrictions.
A great effort. Read on!
The Reader Cup event, like so many other literary projects, is organised by a collaborative committee of staff from the library and teaching staff and assisted by a small army of year 11 literary ambassadors.
Many thanks must go to Mr Church for accompanying our senior Readers’ Cup team to Kepnock High School for this event.
