The Gospel yesterday was also about power. It was the story of Jesus being tempted by the Devil. The Devil threw three powerful temptations Jesus’ way. The first was to turn stones to bread or, in other words, to fulfill all his human needs forever. In the second Jesus was encouraged to throw himself off a high building so that people would see him caught by angels – the adulation of the crowd. And the third had the Devil take Jesus to a mountain top and show him the kingdoms of the world if only Jesus would worship Satan.
Year 12 Induction Liturgy will be celebrated on this Thursday. Our community will invite our Year 12 students to lead. They will be invited to lead through service. Leadership is often equated with a ‘power over’ rather than ‘power for’. I hope that the 2023 Senior class will choose to lead by example and to be outrageously generous in their support for the younger students at Shalom.
Attendance – thank you to all parents and care givers for the efforts you have made so far this year in regard to attendance. Today, as you are aware, is our Interhouse Swimming Carnival which is underway with a vengeance as I write this. Last year, we had in excess of 680 students absent on Swimming Carnival day. Today, we have 260 away. I am really pleased with this but I still think we can do better. Across the school, to date, we have an attendance rate of a touch over 94%. I hope no child or parent will present with a look of absolute surprise if they are not permitted to attend an optional school function, like sport, if their attendance is below 90% or below 80% for ‘special days’. Again, I really appreciate the effort that goes into getting students to school, on time every day. That effort is crucial for success.
Preparing for assessment
We are now past the half-way mark of the term and many students will be working towards assessment. Parents are encouraged to work with their students to develop appropriate homework and study plans – the Record Book is a helpful tool for this purpose. A Homework Study Planner is included for each term (see p.44 and 45 for Term One). A monthly or term overview for your child’s study location at home is also a good strategy.
Parents can access upcoming assessment dates for their children via Sia. Each student has a “Due Work Calendar” that shows upcoming dates for checkpoints, drafts, and exams. To access this calendar for your child in the Sia Smartphone Application please select “My Shalom” and then “Due Work”. On the webpage, an option to select Due Work will show under your child’s photograph on the home page.
Learning Area Coordinators have assigned tasks in each faculty area and class teachers adapt these to specific days/lessons when applicable. Please be aware that some tasks with multiple components may be duplicated in the Due Work Calendar.
Academic Policies and Procedures
It is important to be aware that student assessment is regulated by Shalom’s Academic Policies and Procedures which can be found in the Student Record Book from page 13 to 26. This includes issues surrounding drafting, academic integrity, and non-submission.
Flowcharts outlining the processes required for students who miss an exam or wish to request an extension are on page 15 and 16. Please be aware that extensions need to be applied for in advance of the due date. Drafts are compulsory. Non-submission of a draft may lead to a student being asked to attend a Supplementary Session on Tuesday afternoon. Of particular importance is the requirement for evidence (eg. a medical certificate) for exams missed in all year 11 and 12 subjects.
Please contact the Middle School Coordinator Megan Munckton megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com or Senior School Coordinator Larissa Scoles Larissa_Scoles@shalomcollege.com with any questions regarding assessment submission.
NAPLAN
Year 7 and 9 students completed the last of the NAPLAN practice tests last week. This was a Writing Test undertaken in their English classes.
NAPLAN testing will take place in March on the following dates:
• Wednesday 15 March – Writing
• Friday 17 March – Reading
• Monday 20 March – Conventions of Literacy
• Wednesday 22 March – Numeracy
More detailed timetables will be published closer to the testing.
We ask that all students try their best in the testing so that we have accurate information. The results from testing are used in conjunction with other data to assess individual and cohort strengths as well as areas to improve on. We review existing initiatives and develop teaching programs to support students based on the data.
Earphones (not Bluetooth) are compulsory for NAPLAN testing. Students who present to the test session with bluetooth earphones or without earphones, will be sold a set - $6 charged to the students’ account. We urge all students to keep the earphones in their pencil case ready for testing sessions. The uniform shop has a small supply of earphones for $6. Earphones must have a 3.5mm standard jack. See images below. Wireless/bluetooth earphones (e.g. Apple air pods) are not compatible.
If you wish to withdraw your student from NAPLAN testing, please contact Megan Munckton, Middle School Coordinator, megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com

SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

Ash Wednesday
Last Wednesday students, staff and parishioners joined together in Loyola Chapel for our Ash Wednesday Mass led by Father Sijo. The blessed ashes are placed on the forehead as an expression of faith and humility.
Prayer Liturgies
During House assemblies last week, time was spent in prayer reflecting on our preparation for Easter. The symbols of Lent were introduced and explained, with a particular focus on sackcloth. In Biblical times this thick, course fabric was worn by people seeking repentance for doing wrong. You may have heard the term ‘sackcloth and ashes’ for this reason. While holding a thread of sackcloth, participants reflected on how they can action their intentions this Lent. The gathered sackcloth threads have been placed in a jar in each House area as a visible reminder of these intentions.
Project Compassion
Throughout Lent we encourage a commitment to justice through almsgiving. Once again, this year we will be asking for donations to Caritas through their Project Compassion. The collection boxes are all around the College and will remain so throughout Lent. The money raised is used by Caritas, both in Australia and internationally, to support the most vulnerable people. Their programs seek to educate and empower. The positive outcomes from Caritas programs extend across generations, making lasting change and righting injustices.
Lenten Messages
Bishop Michael McCarthy has shared with us his Lenten Pastoral letter. Pope Francis also has a Lenten message. Click on the links below to read their letters.

Harry M has begun the year very well. He is a great buddy for one of the year 7’s in his PC. During PC each week he leads ‘Walsh Warrior Wednesday’ whereby the Pastoral Care class affirms another student within the PC. Harry is always reliable if something needs doing, He will willingly step in to fill any gaps to ensure the PC session runs smoothly. Harry is very involved in school music/cultural program at the college. He is definitely a ‘quiet achiever’ in Walsh House.

Congratulations to the players who represented Shalom at the Inter-School Chess Competition held on Tuesday 21 February at Avoca State School. Shalom entered an impressive five teams on the day which produced some notable results.
Particular congratulations go to Shalom Black (Callum M, Waylen H, Charlie E and JJ W) who received a team silver medal in a strong field. Shalom Red (Kahn A, Seth G, Joon M and Max C) were not far from a podium finish reflecting the depth of talent we enjoy at Shalom.
Shalom Black - Silver winners
Our remaining teams of Shalom Blue (Nicota F, Harry L, Jonathan E and Alex M), Shalom White (Thomas B, Will M, Jacob O and Luca H) and Shalom Yellow (Lachlan B, Taniela K, Max L and Josh W), all won their fair share of matches. It was particularly pleasing to see our Year 7 Shalom Yellow team produce some excellent chess which is promising for the future of Shalom Chess.
Congratulations also go to Callum M, Waylen H, Charlie E, Kahn A, Seth G and JJ W who received a Merit ribbon for consistent performance on the day - an impressive achievement. Callum and Waylen both had six wins out of seven on the day, equal with the individual silver and bronze medal winners, however both were relegated on a countback.
To see the results in their entirety, follow the link: https://gardinerchess.com.au/event-result/2023-wide-bay-north-secondary-term-1/.
If you are interested in playing or learning chess, then you are more than welcome to join us at chess club on Tuesdays at 11.25am-12.00pm in Beerarlem. The more the merrier! You can find more information about Shalom Chess on our Chess Group Page (https://schoolbox.shalomcollege.com/homepage/6024).
Interesting chess fact: During World War II, some of the top chess players were also code breakers. British masters Harry Golombek, Stuart Milner-Barry and H. O'D. Alexander were on the team which broke the Nazi Enigma code.

Shalom’s new Debate Club attended their first event last week - a training day run by the Queensland Debating Union. This event was an excellent start to the club’s year and for many of the students their first experience of debating.
The workshop’s focus was on formulating a team approach and structuring argument. The students learned how to formulate a case for their team and develop that case across each speaker’s presentation, including rebuttal! There was also time for some students to practice presenting their ideas.
Students from years 7 – 12 attended the day and now plan to participate in the Inter-School Debating competition in Term two as speakers or coaches. Practice of their skills will continue at club meetings each Friday during Term one. New members are always welcome!

We increasingly are hearing terms such as psychological safety and inclusivity; these are particularly pertinent to libraries.
A school library can feature as central to a student because it can enhance the capacity of schools to foster and maintain student wellbeing. The library will very easily become a haven or a refuge for a child in many ways, in nurturing imaginations, inspiring new ideas, or in providing an emotional safe space.
In studies, students have conveyed feelings of connection which impacts on their emotional well-being, and peacefulness, enabling the chance to catch their breath and regroup before rejoining classes.
It would be simplistic to believe that students who gravitate to the library are necessarily avid readers, equally simplistic is the thought that ‘just’ buying books is all the school library is good for. The library as an institution means more to some people, so a well-resourced library might on occasion be better represented by its intuitive and well-trained staff than its stacks of books.
In 2020 three Western Australian libraries initiated a project called School libraries promoting wellbeing to assess school libraries with an qualitative, exploratory approach. Its aim was to determine how school libraries may provide safe and enjoyable spaces, provide resources on health and wellbeing, and facilitate reading for pleasure. The methodology was to directly examine user behaviour and motivation and the results were resoundingly clear; that students felt they belonged.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!

CQU Bundaberg Donation Request
Donations Wanted
Our friends at CQU Bundaberg have asked us to share this with the Shalom community.
CQU Interfaith and Cultural Diversity Society and the Turkish Muslim Community are inviting all schools, faith groups and organisations in Bundaberg to help collect blankets, sleeping bags, jumpers, tracksuits, and nappies for the hundreds of thousands of displaced people of Turkey and Syria. The company in Turkey that plays a similar role to the Australian SES suggests that for health reasons, clothing and bedding items be new, not used.
There are two collection sites:
- The CQU admin office, which is found in block 1 of the Bundaberg CQU Campus on University Drive
- The Muslim Mosque located at 76A Hanbury St, Bundaberg North
We envisage the collection to last 3 weeks with the tentative close date on Tuesday 7 March at 5.00pm.
Every contribution will be a big help, especially for the children in Turkey and Syria many of whom have nothing but the clothes they’re wearing.
For money donations we direct you to the Red Cross link, https://www.redcross.org.au/earthquakes/, which is a direct link to the Turkey/Syria appeal.
Please contact Mike Malouf on m.malouf@cqu.edu.au with any further enquiries.
