Last week we buried two people who have been a great part of the Shalom community. One was 94 and the other 14.
Joan Smith was 94 and the mother of nine children. Joan, her husband Roy, their children, and innumerable grandchildren, have been a great part of Catholic Education in Bundaberg over a very long time.
Sienna McGarry lost a long battle with Cancer. She was in Year 9 at Shalom. She was an incredibly brave and courageous young woman. The celebrations of those two lives prompted me to ask myself, ‘what makes a life worthwhile?’ Was Joan’s life more worthwhile than Sienna’s? She certainly had more time. But some people get lots of years and don’t seem to do a lot with their lives. ‘Worthwhileness’ seems to be much more about the impact for good a life can make than the number of years lived. Put simply, it seems to be much more about those who we love and those who love us. Both Joan and Sienna were deeply loved. Both made a positive difference. Around Shalom, you could not help but be impressed, encouraged and lifted up watching Sienna McGarry throw herself into life and school work at Shalom. She seemed determined to suck the life out of every opportunity she had. Last year she featured on Shalom Day by committing to participate in the Hogan House Dance – even on her ‘walker’!! She certainly made a difference for me on those days when I started to feel a bit sorry for myself about how difficult my day had been – and then I saw Sienna motor past on her walking frame determined to get to her next class on time. She was a champion.
In a different way, Joan Smith raised nine kids in a simple household. She worked as a Librarian at Shalom. In retirement, Joan and Roy devoted enormous energy to their children and grandchildren. They also made numerous visits to Papua New Guinea to work with the Christian Brothers and assist those in significant need in that country. Joan lived out the values of this College with a passion. This community is what it is because of people like Joan Smith and Sienna McGarry. Thank God for them. And we hope that the families of those two wonderful people feel the loving support of the community and the arms of a loving God wrapped around them tightly in the days, weeks, and months ahead.
Breakfast with Darius Boyd – on Thursday 31 August, Shalom is hosting a breakfast with Rugby League identity Darius Boyd at Across the Waves Club. This event follows an earlier very successful event ‘Empowering Women’. This event is sponsored by both Shalom and ‘Brave Brothers’ which has a focus on ‘Men’s Wellness’. Darius will be interviewed by local ABC Radio (and Shalom parent) Scott Lamond. Everyone is welcome but I really hope that we can encourage lots of dads and sons to attend this event a couple of days before ‘Father’s Day’ this year. Tickets are $40 each for a full breakfast. Tables of ten are available. The link for booking is now open.

Sport Highlights there were many from the last holiday period –
• Our Rowers travelled to Rockhampton for a State Regatta and enjoyed plenty of success.
• The Girls’ and Boys’ Netball teams participated in the annual QISSN Carnival in Brisbane. The Girls won Division 4 and the Boys were outstanding.
• The Boys’ and Girls’ Rugby League teams participated in the QISSRL Carnival, also in Brisbane. The boys had our best result ever with a fifth-place finish in Division 1. The Girls were always courageous and had their fair share of wins.
• Our Equestrian team attended the Aldridge Equestrian Challenge. Our Equestrian team is small but determined and competitive.
Shalom Past Student Peter Doherty (Senior 1993) is taking a significant step towards becoming a Priest with his Ordination to the Deaconate Thursday of this week in St Joseph’s Cathedral in Rockhampton.
Dealing with Grief – the two deaths I spoke about earlier will have an impact on young people in different ways. If issues of grief raise issues for your child/children that would benefit from having a chat with someone, please encourage them to make an online booking to visit a Cousellor at Shalom or to seek support from an outside agency.

SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

Japanese Department Recap Term 2
At Shalom College, we believe in acknowledging the efforts of our students and providing them with a well-deserved break to celebrate their accomplishments. Last term, Year 8 and Year 9 students had the opportunity to enjoy unique end-of-term celebrations that left them with lasting memories.
For the Year 8 students, their commitment to meeting assessment deadlines did not go unnoticed. To commend their diligence and punctuality, we organised a special onigiri (Japanese rice cakes) party. It was a joyous occasion that served as a reminder of the importance of dedication and meeting deadlines.
Meanwhile, the Year 9 students embarked on an excursion to the Botanical Gardens. As they strolled through the Japanese garden, they were treated to an authentic sushi platter, expertly prepared by a local sushi chef. Surrounded by serene nature, they immersed themselves in the rich cultural experience, appreciating the flavours of Japan while reflecting on their own growth throughout the Semester.
Japanese Beautiful Words
Hinode, refers to the break of dawn or the sunrise.
A radiant source of inspiration illuminates the skies and awakens the spirit within. It embarks on a sacred journey, transcending boundaries and unveiling the enigmatic dance of solar energy. Through its watchful gaze, we glimpse the grandeur and majesty of our universe, reminding us of our humble place. Hinode's quest for knowledge ignites a fire within us, urging us to pursue our dreams, unravel mysteries, and embrace the boundless wonders that lie beyond the horizon. Here’s to a new term of learning, inspiration and quest to follow our dreams.

BOYS TEAM – 7 WINS, 2 DRAWS & 2 LOSSES!
After 4 months of trainings, trial games and tournaments we finally headed to Brisbane in the first week of the school holidays to compete at QISSN!
With 64 girl’s teams, 18 boy’s teams and world class selectors in attendance, the QISSN Carnival is the ultimate Netball Competition in Australia.
For a team of 10 boys that had basically never played netball before, our results were just amazing – 7 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses, with a final placement of 5th out of the 18 teams. The level of netball that we got to was brilliant and I was so proud of the constant effort and continual building in every game that we played.
One of my favourite phrases for sports teams is ‘we will get the result that we deserve’ and we absolutely did, this was due to the outstanding commitment and hard work that this group of young men demonstrated across the entire Netball Program.
Deservedly, our Captain, Keenan M was named MVP for the team, and he was also named in the Allstars Merit Team along with 11 other incredibly talented athletes.
Our week was wonderful, filled with superb netball, fun group activities and creating connections with the best group of Students and Staff, that all represented Shalom beautifully.
I am grateful to have been on this journey and hope that we can challenge for a higher placing in 2024!

GIRLS TEAM - AMELIARANNE WELLS DIVISION 4 TROPHY WINNERS!
The team this year came together beautifully and had good connections both on and off court. Fabulous netball was played with some high-octane moments and edge of your seat thrills!
We had mixed results through the pool games but remained team-spirited and executed a strong finish through the finals series, winning our last 4 games and beating Mt Alvernia College in the Division 4 Grand Final to bring home the Ameliaranne Wells Trophy. This is our first divisional win since 2018 so it was a wonderful finish to this year’s QISSN Program and gave cause for celebration.
Co-captain Bailey G was named MVP for the team – her good sportsmanship and extensive netball abilities stood out during the carnival, and this was duly noted by our opposing teams.
It was a pleasure sharing this experience with this team of young ladies and over all a great campaign.

QUT Science Trip - Explore your Future Excursion
Last term Shalom College Science Department was the recipient of a $5000 of an Explore your Future Grant from the Queensland University of Technology – QUT.
This program is designed for QUT Widening Participation partner schools and community groups to participate in on campus excursion experiences.
On the Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 June, the Year 10/11 science students got up very early and travelled to Brisbane via the tilt train for a two day QUT campus immersion experience. Students were able to visit both QUT campuses – Kelvin Grove and Gardens Point.
At Kelvin Grove students were given a tour of the campus enabling them to see what university life looks like. They also toured the many health related clinics that enable university students to complete their practical studies on campus in the areas of Podiatry, Optometry, Exercise Science and Psychology.
After a big day of walking on the first day students were taken out to dinner at Ahmets Turkish restaurant. A new experience for many of them. This was followed by a range of yummy desserts at Southbank.
On Wednesday, they walked again down to Garden’s Point campus. As they toured the campus students were able to participate in a range of hands on activities such as:
- the interactive “Cube” wall
- anatomy and physiology workshop (sorted bones and organs and did electrocardiographs)
- engineering workshop – using CAD design programs.
A big thank you to all the QUT staff for giving up their time to show our Shalom students some of the amazing things that they can study at QUT.
A really big thank you to the QUT student volunteers who spent the two days showing our students around. It was great to see Lauren Blackwell – an ex-Shalom Student (currently studying engineering at QUT) who did a great job showing us around.
A big thank you also to teachers Grace Tobin and Steven Jenes who helped supervise this trip.
And lastly a big thank you to the 23 students who represented Shalom College extremely well with their enthusiasm, perfect behaviour and respectful manners on this trip.
Teacher - Science Department
Term three will be a busy one for Shalom libraries as we realise a few special literary projects and events in collaboration with the English faculty.
We have already seen our magnificent Readers’ Cup teams from Years 7 and 8, under the guidance of Mrs Cahill and Ms Lyons, representing Shalom last term and on Friday 4 August we can look forward to the senior teams from Years 9/10 teams managed by Mrs Parton and Dr Davies, compete at Kepnock.
Hot on the heels of that event, on Friday 11 August, Shalom will be hosting its First Draft Festival. The theme of ‘Locally grown’, Shalom will host four guest authors: a General Practitioner, and an Oncologist, both from Bundaberg, a teacher from Gin Gin, and an ex-Shalom student now residing in Brisbane.
In the last session of the First Draft Festival, the winners of our Shalom Literary Wonders writing competition will be announced.
Then get set for some exciting activities during Book Week which this year is celebrated from the Saturday 19 to Friday 25 of August.

Commonwealth Youth Games - Trinidad and Tobago 2023
Congratulations to Shalom teacher Rebecca Jenner who has been announced as the Australian Coach for the Commonwealth Youth Games held in Trinidad and Tobago this year.
From all Triathlon coaches in Australia, Rebecca was selected as the female coach to take the Australian Triathlon team to the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Commonwealth Games Australia have officially announced the Australia Triathlon Youth Games team. The team will attend the games in August at Trinidad and Tobago for 2 weeks.
Rebecca has been coaching Triathlon for 12 years to a National level, with many athletes reaching the Queensland team and medaling at National Championships. Throughout these 12 years, she has coached juniors from 10 to 18 years old. Junior athletes have come to her with a desire to swim and run and she has built them up from a beginner level to an elite sports level.
Rebecca has a passion for triathlon with not only coaching but also participating actively in it.
Last weekend, Rebecca attended the Australian Duathlon Championships, coming 3rd female overall, which will mean she was selected and will compete for Australia at the World duathlon championships in 2024.
This opportunity to travel with the Commonwealth Youth Games team as an Australian Coach is a dream come true for Rebecca.
Congratulations Rebecca for an amazing acheivement.

Rowing - Central Queensland School Regatta Rockhampton
The first weekend of the school holidays, a team of 28 rowers travelled to Rockhampton to compete against the Central Queensland district. Saturday saw the racing delayed for 2 hours as fog engulfed the course, however, we were blessed with wonderful race conditions for the rest of the weekend. With over 240 competitors, this resulted in lots of heats, semis and finals. It was great to see most of our rowers progressing into the semis in their singles and into the finals in their crew boats.
Congratulations to our medal winners:
Gold – Girls Year 10 Single – Jada C
Silver – Girls Year 9 Single – Sophie E
Silver – Boys Years 8 Quad – Ellouise R (cox), Max L, Stan M, Balin C, Wade C
Bronze – Boys Years 8 Quad – Olivia G (cox), Olivia F, Zander D, Ryder D, Dylan A
Bronze – Girls Open Single – Emily E
A special shout out to our Years 7 that joined in the regatta – Max L, Wade C, Balin C, Stan M and Olivia F. Rowing Queensland regattas youngest age group is Year 8. So, the Year 7’s were rowing up into the Year 8 age group. All the year 7’s walked away with a medal which is an oarsome result for only starting this year, rowing up and competing in their first away regatta.
THANK YOU again to all the parents, volunteers and coaches that make this sport, and these opportunities possible. It takes a lot of hands and hours to put our rowers on the water and even more when we have to travel away – so THANK YOU. Looking forward to providing more updates later this term with more regattas happening in Term 3. Thank you to our sponsors as well for financially helping our team with our new shirts and bucket hats.

Tennis - Queensland Secondary Schools Tennis State Champtionships
On Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 June, Zain A, Lachlan C, Lachlan R, Xander W and Harry K represented Shalom as the Wide Bay Champions in the Queensland Secondary Schools Teams Tennis (QSSTT) Event. In this competition, Shalom played the best schools from each region in Queensland stretching from the Gold Coast to Peninsula and all the regions in-between. The standard of tennis in this competition is very high, with many of the schools running ‘Schools of Excellence’ in tennis.
In the face of this strong competition, our boys showed some exceptional skills, fighting hard in true Shalom spirit. Wins were difficult to come by in the early rounds against the strong metropolitan teams, however the boys found some success when playing other regional teams finishing 9th overall. It was obvious watching the level of tennis, that our boys have the ability to compete with the best in the State – the difference being the consistency the southern players have due to their heavy training commitments. Lachlan C showed his amazing talent gaining the best results of our team, winning two of his singles matches and a doubles. Zain A won the overall Sportsmanship Award, voted by the players of other teams as a quality player who always plays in the right spirit – an excellent achievement. Lachlan R, Xander W and Harry K also showed excellent skills, and each showed worthy competitiveness and improvement throughout the competition.
The trip was fantastic fun as well as being challenging, with the boys showing great team spirit and a sense of fun on and off the court. Hopefully we can repeat it in 2024!

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
Volunteers Required - Markets Tuckshop
We are seeking your help!! We are always in need of new volunteers for the Markets Tuckshop and BBQ. If your child/children would like to gain some work experience, why not get them to volunteer in the canteen. If you have a few hours you could spare to assist in our canteen, please click on the link below to register your assistance or contact Leanne via email at barkerl@shalomcollege.com.
If we get enough volunteers, it may work out that you only need to volunteer once per term.
