The Shalom College Formal (or Prom, but I hate that word) is on Saturday week. This is a much anticipated event in our calendar each year. I have just left another lunchtime Year 12 dance practice where our young women and men were learning the intricacies of the Waltz and Gypsy Tap. Each year, I think the students enjoy the series of dance practices as much as the event itself. Shalom is one of the few schools that has parents attend the Formal along with their child. I believe and most of the feedback I have ever received, is that parents really love the chance to share in this occasion with their son or daughter. Whilst it is a great event, I am conscious of the added cost burden to families of events like this. We try to keep the cost to parents as low as possible and the College always runs this event at a loss. As a parent, I know how easy it is to get trapped in rampant consumerism on occasions like this. It’s easy for young people to get ‘over invested’ in events like this and spend far too much money on being ‘beautiful’ or having a flash car or an incredible spray tan. I hope, as parents and teachers, we will help young people keep events like this in perspective. This won’t be, I hope, anywhere near the ‘greatest night of their lives’! One day each of them hopefully will find a ‘soul mate’ and welcome their first child into the world or be involved in an activity that will make a big difference for others. All of these things will far outshine a school Formal.
Each year some young people also put too much focus on parties that might be held after an event like the Formal. As an educator, I always, ‘hold my breath’ a little until a day or so after the event. We have had to deal with consequences of young people making really poor decisions at events like those. Personally, I cannot comprehend why some parents would choose to run the risk of the enormous litigation problems that can very easily result from hosting gatherings for young people where they know alcohol will be consumed. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that this year’s Shalom Formal will only leave everyone involved with wonderful memories of a great cohort of young people ‘glammed up’ and having had a wonderful time with their friends and family. Done well, it is a real highlight of the year.
Two Bishops in Town! Next Monday, Bundaberg will get a visit from our Bishop, Michael McCarthy. He will have with him the Papal Nuncio to Australia (like the Ambassador from the Vatican), Archbishop Charles Balvo (who is an American). They will be celebrating Mass next Monday 27/5, at 11.30am in Holy Rosary Church. This Mass will be our local celebration to commemorate ten years of service by Bishop Michael to the Diocese. Anyone is welcome to attend. Shalom will be represented at this function by some students and staff.
Student Free Day is on Friday May 31
Walk for Awareness in regard to Domestic Violence is on Friday May 24 commencing at 7.15am at Bywash Park (beside the Basketball Stadium). All are welcome. Students are able to put their names down for a bus to return them to school by 8.30am with their House Deans.

Alternate Venue - External Examinations
QCAA expects that all our Year 12 students will sit their scheduled external examinations at Shalom College. These exams run from Monday 21 October – Tuesday 12 November. The exam timetable will be released by QCAA later this term.

Laudato si’ Week
This week we will celebrate Laudato Si’ Week by setting challenges that encourage us all to care for our common home – earth. Pope Francis has called for global dialogue in his letter, Laudato si’, that he addressed to ‘every person living on this planet’. Our daily actions and decisions have an impact on the environment, so in week 6 we will be challenged to make better decisions.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.
Wednesday 22 May Mrs O'Driscoll's 10 RE B & C
Wednesday 29 May Mr Richardson's 10 RE D, E & F
Wednesday 5 June Mr Gilbert's 10 RE G & J
Also, if you would like to join in other Parish services, the Catholic Parish of Bundaberg advertises Mass times at https://www.bundabergcatholic.net.au/mass-prayer/

The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is an award program which recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. The 'goal posts' for all our students are different, however all students are capable of achieving their own success targets. There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers.

Science & Engineering Challenge 2024
On Wednesday 15 May, a team of 26 students of Shalom’s best & brightest participated in the Science and Engineering Challenge held at the Bundaberg PCYC. The Science and Engineering Challenge is a day-long competition designed to provide Year 9 & 10 students with a positive experience of Science and Engineering.
Each school provides 8 teams of 3 or 4 students. Each team is assigned a challenge in which they must design, build and test something in order to solve a problem. There are 8 possible challenges including designing, building and testing a balsa wood plane, fish trap device, earthquake-proof tower and bridge.
L-R: Connor, Ryder, Haron and Kayden
Shalom students showed some exceptional enthusiasm in these challenges displaying excellent problem-solving skills and teamwork to finish in 4th place on the day. The scores between the top schools were very close and performances across all groups were all fantastic. Once again, our students participated in the great spirit that Shalom is known for and the day was enjoyed by all who attended.

• Junior Science Olympiad Years 9 & 10 Wednesday 12 June 2024
• Junior Science Olympiad Years 7 & 8 Friday 14 June 2024
The exam is based on general science content (biology, chemistry and physics) and assumes students have a good knowledge of the Australian Curriculum – Science up to a Year 10 level. Some questions in the exam may also involve higher-level content (such as might be encountered by an extended Year 10 student). A range of analysis questions will also be included for which any necessary extra information is provided.
Exams are two-hours long and are completed all online. Students can only sit one exam level.
All students sitting the same exam must do so at the same time, under normal exam conditions and supervision.
Students will receive a certificate indicating their grade based on their exam performance. Students that perform exceptionally well, and are eligible, may receive invitations to future science extension programs and activities hosted by Australian Science Innovations.
All students who wish to be considered for JSO Spring School and selection on the team representing Australia at the International Junior Science Olympiad must sit our JSO Exam.
