Sometimes you hear it said that ‘perceptions are everything’. I don’t think that’s true. Very often I find my perceptions or those of others to be ill informed. A lack of information or worse, a lack of desire to find out more, can lead to inaccurate perceptions and, if we act on those, poor decision making. Someone shared the following story with me that, I think, highlights that point.
A friend of mine, returning home from a long stay in Europe, found herself with some time to spare at London’s Heathrow Airport. Buying a cup of coffee and a small packet of biscuits, she staggered, laden with luggage to an unoccupied table. She was reading the morning paper when she became aware of someone rustling at her table. From behind her paper, she was flabbergasted to see a neatly dressed young man helping himself to her biscuits. She did not want to make a scene so she leaned across and took a biscuit herself. A minute or so passed. More rustling. He was helping himself to another biscuit.
By the time they were down to the last biscuit in the pack, she was very angry but still could not bring herself to say anything. Then the young man broke the last biscuit in two, pushed half across to her, ate the other half and left.
So what’s the point? Its’ simply this – our ways of viewing things are often incomplete, inaccurate or completely messed up. Therefore, we shouldn’t be so quick to judge, label or form rigid opinions of others, or ourselves for that matter. Just because someone we like, or love, tell us something, does not make it true. From our limited points of view, we seldom see the whole picture or have all the facts.
Shalom Day we will celebrate this Thursday. This is one of our very special days in our calendar as we celebrate who we are as a community. It’s always a great day. Before Covid, we had been building up a great tradition of combining the Liturgy and Morning Tea that follows with our ‘Grandparents’ Day’. That is very much back on our agenda again and we look forward to welcoming many Grandparents and Parents to the start of the day.
Our Rowers - are psyched up for Head of the River which is on this weekend. This is the premier schools event for 2024 and our rowers have been training hard for months. Every best wish to all participants and their coaches.
Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival (QCMF) last weekend saw almost 160 Shalom students travel to Brisbane for this annual gathering of Catholic schools. We took 16 different groups this year with 11 staff. It was a major but very successful effort. Great to see first time groups in Rock Bands, Guitar groups and Drum lines joining our Choirs and Instrumental groups. Shalom Performing Arts is knocking the house down!!

Rescheduled Year 9 and Year 10 Subject Selection Evening – Tuesday 20 August
Thank you for your understanding with our decision to postpone last Tuesday’s event due to the weather. We did not want to risk asking our families to head out in that horrible weather so we will hold the information sessions this Tuesday night. Hopefully, last Tuesday afternoon students received an email with their Web choices portal link and their unique password. If not, could they please see me at Student Reception.
Information session times will remain the same as previously advertised. Year 8 students selecting subject choices for Year 9, in 2025 will commence at 6.30pm. Year 9 students selecting subject choices for Year 10 in 2025 will commence at 7pm.
Each will be a short presentation covering the subject selection process and platform we use to make subject choices online. They will also cover information about the number of Core and Elective subjects’ students are required to study, and where to access information about the subjects offered at each year level.
There will be no specific subject information given on each of the different subjects available to study because of the sheer volume on offer. This information is available in the Subject Selection Book. Heads of Department will be available on the night to address any questions you may have regarding the selection of subjects to study.
The timeline around the Year 9 and Year 10 subject selections are as follows:
13 August - Edval WebChoice portal opens for student to select subjects
20 August - Parent Information Evening
27 August - Signed Edval WebChoice receipt to be handed into Student Reception

St Vincent de Paul Homelessness Awareness Afternoon
Last Thursday from 3.30pm – 7pm we held a Homelessness Awareness Afternoon for students from all year levels. Michael Siccama, our Vinnies Youth Engagement and Development Officer, led the students through several activities. One of these activities the students were given a particular character description and they had to go to the different businesses set up around the room to find shelter for the night. Meeting the criteria for any of the accommodation options was quite challenging and showed the students it isn’t always easy to find help when you need it.
There was also discussion about the three categories of homelessness, Primary – which is the one we would think is the main form of our homelessness is only 7%, Secondary and Tertiary homelessness make up 93%.
The students were then given a specials catalogue from a grocery store and were told they had $80 to shop for enough food to last them for two weeks. This was an interesting activity to see what some of them thought they would need.
Thank you to Mr Mark Algie in the tuckshop as we didn’t go hungry. We shared a simple meal of soup and bread.
Our last activity was building a shelter out of cardboard. Lucky for us it was inside so we didn’t have wind and rain to compete with as a lot of homeless people need to.
While the students had fun participating in these activities, the intent of the evening was for them to develop a clearer understanding of this social issue along with empathy for those affected.
Thank you to Michael and the staff members who assisted with this afternoon.

Shalom Day
Our annual celebration of all things ‘Shalom’ is on this Thursday 22 August.
For students this is a free dress day. No crop tops, singlet tops, short shorts or ripped jeans. They will require closed in shoes and they need to bring a hat, but it doesn’t have to be a school hat. Students are asked to bring a gold coin to donate to their House Charity. Students should bring a small bag for their lunch, hat, water bottle and sunscreen. No devices will be needed as they will be too busy participating in activities to use them.
We would also like grandparents to come along for the Prayer Celebration at 10am and the morning tea that follows. We will have seating in the Sports Centre for those that are able to join us on the day.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Year 8 and Year 9 students.

Shalom student success – Gymnastics
The Central Queensland Regional Championships (Womens Artistic Gymnastics) were held on 4th August in Yeppoon. Shalom student Paige K competed strongly, placing second All Around in the Level 5 Open age group. She was also selected into the CQ Level 5 Regional Team to compete at State Champs in September. Paige had already qualified for States as an individual, so will compete twice in all 4 apparatus- vault, uneven bars, beam and floor at the event in Brisbane. Congratulations Paige!!
Karting
Ky B recently competed at the Australian Kart Championships Round 4 Coffs Harbour. It wasn’t the best start for him, qualifying 10th. He made up a few spots through the heats, to then finish the final on the podium P3. Ky is currently sitting in 3rd position, for the championship. The last round will be held in Oakleigh, Victoria at the end of August.
Ky also competed at the FIA Karting Academy Round 3 in Sweden. Ky had the pace in practice, however when it came to qualifying unfortunately there was a lack of pace. He qualified 21st. One minute it was sunny, the next raining. Going into the final Ky made up a few spots, starting out of 19th. With 3 laps to go, Ky had made his way up to 6th position, to only be taken out by another driver. Not the end to the series he would have liked, however unfortunately racing is racing.
Netball - Vicki Wilson Competition
Last week, the Shalom Junior Vicki Wilson netball team travelled to Brisbane to compete in the State Finals of the Vicki Wilson Competition. The Vicki Wilson Netball Competition is a long running, state-wide netball competition open to all schools (state and non-state).
In the junior division, the competition started back in April with 126 schools from across the state (Peninsula to Gold Coast). Regional winners then progressed to the 20-team State Final competition.
Placed in a pool which held the eventual runners-up (Moreton Bay College) and 5th placed (Mountain Creek SHS) teams, the Shalom College team played some excellent netball over the two days, taking a couple of big hits along the way in their playoff games (Glenala SHS and Canterbury College).
The girls finished in 10th place, which is their highest placing in this competition since 2019. It also means they finished as the highest placed regional school across both junior and senior divisions in the 2024 competition! Thanks to Mrs Pearson and Ms Burgess as well as Mr Kaufusi (Bus Driver).
Well done girls!
Shalom – Rowing
Please support Shalom Rowing’s Father’s Day Raffle. We are fundraising for a new safety boat & outboard. Our current safety boats have been repaired too many times & we need to start replacing them. Safety boats are essential to our sport as rowing is considered a high risk sport, with each crew needing a coach & safety boat on the water with them. Please share with your family & friends. How cool would it be give Dad one of these prizes for Father’s Day!!!

Congratulations to our Year 7/8 Boys on an impressive comeback victory over Xavier College, securing their spot in the Wide Bay regional final against Kingaroy SHS. Our Year 9 Boys faced a tough challenge against a combined Year 9/10 Xavier College team and came up just short in a close game. They showed strong dominance, particularly in defence, but were unable to capitalise on their opportunities. (Note: our year 10s were ineligible due to playing Dolphins Challenge).
The year 7/8 Boys will play this Wednesday 21 August at Jack Stokes Oval Gympie, kicking off at 12pm. The winner from this game will progress to play the winner from the Sunshine Coast Region.
Thank you, Mr. Rasmussen, for your time and dedication to coach the year 9 team. A big thank you as well to all the Year 9 boys for their commitment and hard work throughout the season.

Middle School Academic Showcase
In week 10 this term, we are excited to once again celebrate the academic achievements of our middle school students. We invite all parents, guardians and students in Year 7, 8 and 9 to the 2024 Middle School Academic Showcase on Thursday 12 September at the Waterford building. Join us anytime between 3:30pm and 5:00pm to enjoy a cuppa and biscuit, and browse the various displays.
On display will be a range of student work from across the curriculum areas, including dance and poetry performances. A schedule of the live events will come out soon.
We would like to extend the invitation to grandparents as well. This year there are lucky door prizes to be won. Students have the chance to win one of five $10 tuck-shop vouchers. Parents and grandparents go into the draw to win a grocery voucher.
Hope to see you there!
Dance Star National Championships
The Dance Performance Teams recently returned from a very rewarding trip to Adelaide for the Dance Star National Championships. This event saw the best of the best from schools across QLD, NSW, VIC and SA come together to compete for the title of National Champion in their respective sections. To qualify for this event was a huge achievement, making it through two rounds of competitions to get there, a regional qualifier in April, followed by the QLD State Finals in June.
The team’s results were beyond incredible, representing our State and School with pride and returning home with a total of 18 medals between soloists and groups which included eight gold, four silver and six bronze, with Team Voltage placing third in both their lyrical and jazz routines. An exceptional achievement! It was a wonderful experience, performing amongst the best of the best at a fantastic venue such as the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, and spending together, seeing the sights of Adelaide. A rewarding experience that won’t be forgotten any time soon.

On July 31, a group of Year 10 girls travelled to Kepnock State School to participate in the Readers Cup competition. The Readers Cup is an event organised by the Queensland Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) to promote reading among teenagers.
In the lead-up to this competition, we read four books: Grace Notes by Karen Comer, Hamlet is Not OK by R.A. Spratt, Eleanor Jones is Not a Murderer by Amy Doak, and Inkflower by Suzi Zail. The books were exciting and entertaining; our favourite was Eleanor Jones.
When the day came, we had to work together to recall details and discuss answers to seven rounds of specific questions about the books.
Before lunch, we had accumulated 18 points and were treated to fruits and Subway cookies.
Afterwards, they were straight back at it, and by the end of the competition, we finished with 35 points. What was better was that participants' names were pulled out of a container at random throughout the competition, and each student went home with a book prize.
Overall, the competition was not just a test of our reading skills, but also an enjoyable experience.
Shalom is proud of our students' performance and their enthusiasm for reading.

Congratulations to year 12 student Charlie D who was nominated for the Peter Doherty award, by teacher Ms Debbie Bishop, which he was successful in achieving. Charlie has written a short statement of what winning the award means to him.
Attending the Peter Doherty award ceremony on Tuesday afternoon was a great experience as I met other like-minded students, alongside the Education Minister and Director General of Education. It was an incredible honour to receive this prestigious award. I plan to use the money on accommodation costs at university next year, studying Machine Learning. Thanks to Mrs. Bishop for handling my application, and Mr. Ray for the last minute school blazer borrow.
Pink and Purple Day 2024 – Cert III Business
On Thursday 1 August, the Year 12 Certificate III Business class hosted Pink and Purple Day. This special day promotes awareness and raises funds for Breast Cancer Support and Relay for Life. Students and staff donned their pink and purple accessories for the day and purchased pink and purple items as part of the fundraiser, raising $1200 to donate to our charities.
The Cert III Business class of 2024 had been planning their ideas since the start of Year 11 and were well prepared and very enthusiastic. They created promotional logos, researched and priced products to make a profit, presented on assembly three times, created posters and sold their products over three market sessions. They sold ribbons, wristbands, lollies and cupcakes, and received gold coin donations in support of our charities that help so many in our community.
Thank you to all who supported our cause and to our kind sponsors, Chics Pies and Bundy Pies & Patisseries who donated 150 beautiful purple cupcakes to our school for this event, and Cupcakes by K Rose who supplied their specially designed cupcakes to us at cost price. All proceeds from these kind donors contributed to a record total for our Cert III Business class fundraiser.
Thank you to organiser, Matt Griffiths, Bundaberg Rotary volunteers and Bundaberg Police Officers for teaching our Year 10s at the RYDA day last Wednesday 14 August (Road Safety Youth Driver Awareness).
The Year 10s rotated through 6 activities and learnt a lot about Road Safety and Driver Awareness. The students were very well behaved. Thank you to our Shalom staff who supervised our Year 10s for the day.

The best way to learn is to experience, or at the very least to hear about others’ experiences firsthand. On Friday 9 August Shalom hosted its First Draft Festival for interested students in years 9 and 10 (for the senior session) and years 7 and 8 (for the junior session).
The juniors were treated to a session from senior English Head of Department Louise Hume and then a lively presentation from Sue Ellen Pashley.
The seniors were involved in an all-day event and were able to learn about all things writing and publishing from Sue Ellen Pashley, S.R. ‘Selena’ Silcox, Rikke Justesen, and Craig Mulhall.
The most gratifying part, say all our authors, is at the end when the students come down from their position in the audience and gather around their presenters full of questions and wanting to meet. And from an observer’s vantage, it’s very pleasing to see the obvious delight on our visitors’ faces when they are swarmed.
Also featured was the announcement of the winners of our Shalom College Literary Wonders Writer’s competition. These were invited to come and claim their prize by Local author Craig Mulhall, a duty he greatly enjoyed.
Here are the winners and runners up for each category:
7/8 short story:
Winner: Lillian T. - The Bridge of Retrospect
Runner up: Lillian T. - Something ‘Even Abracadabra’ Can’t Fix
9/10 Short story:
Winner: Waylen H. - The Bird
9/10 Poetry:
Asha D. - Magic
Gabrielle A. - Hidden in a Storybook
11/12 Short story:
Winner: Lexi B. - The Wind Will Be My Hands
Runner up: Callum M. - Reflections of Loss
11/12 Poetry:
Winner: Callum M. - Curie’s Magic
Congratulations to our worthy literary champions and thanks you to everyone that entered the competition.
Over the next few weeks of the term, we will feature some of these works in the newsletter.

UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF MARY MOTHER OF CHURCH
"The annual parish "Good News" magazine is now available in all churches for a Gold Coin Donation. As you read our in-house publication of the Good News magazine this year, discover the ways in which our parish vision statement is being made clear.
Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to ser
ve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given. This concludes the weekend of September 14 & 15.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love
respectfully, with all people”.
