When the black and white photographs come to life...
For many years ANZAC day was a day where we honoured the memories of the Australian soldiers who landed at Gallipoli in 1915. Whilst that is still a focus today, Australians have broadened their scope of recognition. In 2023, we will acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of all Australians who have fought and died while representing this country.
Considering that the youngest of the original ANZACs were approximately 18 years of age, the latest that they would have been born was 1897. No-one who served in World War 1 is alive today. For those who served in World War 2, they would currently, if still alive, be in their nineties. In recent decades, our memories of the Diggers are of men and women who have become old and frail due to the passing of time.
In many homes around Australia, there will be photos – some displayed in frames in living rooms, but most in albums, stored away under houses, in attics or beneath beds. However, a look through these albums will tell their own story. For there you will find a world of black and white, where young, fit, athletic men and women stand or sit in the center of photographs. They are not likely to be smiling as this was not the practice 100 years ago. There is perhaps a signature in the bottom corner and the photo itself is creased, dog eared, or turning yellow.
Looking through the images tells many family stories. They are youthful versions of great grandparents with many a vision of a young man who bears a resemblance to a brother, cousin, or uncle who is alive today. Sadly, many of these young men and women never returned from the war. It can be very powerful to reflect, to take a moment to wonder what they would have become. Who would they have married? What career would they have forged for themselves? Who would have been born into families that never eventuated?
For many of us today, that is why we march on 25 April. That is why young children, adolescents, and adults, proudly pin the ribbons and medals of past uncles, aunts, or grandparents to their chests. Not to honour war, but to honour the memory and the sacrifice of the young man or woman, who bears a striking resemblance to others in the family fold, but who gave up their youth so that we could have ours.
The photos may be static and decaying, but the images contained within them live on for all time.
Thank you to Mr Vince Haberman, a guest at our ANZAC Liturgy last Thursday, for his kind donation of the following book:
The Lost Boys: The Untold Story of the Under-age ANZAC Soldiers Who Fought in the First World War. Some of the boys were as young as thirteen, having lied about their age.
Removal of trees - the trees on our oval have been removed to allow for the extension of our ovals and the re-alignment of the existing spaces.
It is always sad to have to remove trees and the College does not do so lightly. As we have done in the past, we will replant the number of trees lost elsewhere on our property.
Welcome back to Term 2 learning!
A warm welcome back to all Shalom families. We hope that the Easter break was restful and that all students are feeling refreshed and ready for learning. Term 2 can seem particularly busy with many events, including the Shalom Musical, Athletics Carnival, Anzac Day March, and Shalom Formal, scheduled for this term. Taking time to review your child’s preparedness for the term and reflect on their organisational and study strategies for homework and assessment is a worthwhile step for encouraging a successful term.
Parents are encouraged to work with their students to develop appropriate homework and study plans – the Record Book is a helpful tool for this purpose. A Homework Study Planner is included for each term (see p.70 and 71 for Term Two). A monthly or term overview for your child’s study location at home is also a good strategy.
Learning Area Coordinators assign tasks in each faculty area and class teachers adapt these to specific days/lessons when applicable. Please be aware that some tasks with multiple components may be duplicated in the Due Work Calendar. Early each term, teachers review term planning and set dates for the term’s assessment. Parents can access upcoming assessment dates for their children via Sia. Each student has a “Due Work Calendar” that shows upcoming dates for checkpoints, drafts, and exams. To access this calendar for your child in the Sia Smartphone Application please select “My Shalom” and then “Due Work”. On the webpage, an option to select Due Work will show under your child’s photograph on the home page.
Encouraging successful and effective study habits can be difficult when you aren’t sure what is most effective. There is research that supports the use of particular strategies in revision and study. Some recommended approaches include interleaving, spacing and retrieval. For a short overview of these key ideas and how to apply them, presented by leading psychologists in the field of human learning and memory, try this short and engaging TEDex presentation:

SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

Holy Week Assembly
On Thursday 30 March we held our Holy Week Assembly. The students led us through the journey that Jesus made in his final days. The story they told happened in Jerusalem over 2000 years ago, but ‘the story’ never ended and it continues today.
We began with Palm Sunday and the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, as an exuberant class of Year 8 students shouted, ‘Hosanna to the King’ and others waved their palm branches. Following this was the Last Supper. We placed bread and wine on our table as our ‘Treble Makers’ beautifully sang the song, 'We Come to Your Feast'. Three students as ‘Apostles’ recalled the events of this meal.
The Lenten intentions, previously gathered in House groups at the start of Lent, were then brought forward by House representatives. The cross was carried in and placed at the front of the assembly as Miss Clark hauntingly sang, 'Were You There When They Crucified My Lord', to the hammering of Jesus being nailed to the cross. Finally, Year 12 student, Tara performed a beautiful movement to a poetry reflection on the Crucifixion.
Class Masses
Each Religious Education class is allocated to a Wednesday morning 8am Mass in Loyola Chapel. The class, along with another, co-hosts this Parish Mass by taking the roles of readers and processors. When your student has an upcoming class Mass, you will receive a notification or an invitation to attend. We warmly welcome all to this weekly joint Parish School celebration. The Year 11 Religion & Ethics classes are hosting over the next few weeks.

The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is an award program which recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. The ‘goal posts’ for all our students are different, however all students are capable of achieving their own success targets. There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers.
Teachers have selected up to two students from each of their middle school classes to nominate for a Term One ROSA award. These students will be presented with the award on House Assembly early in this term. The awardees will have their name published in an upcoming Shalom Newsletter.

Damien House would like to acknowledge Hunter L as this week's quiet achiver - although he is not always quiet. Hunter always volunteers to contribute and lead in House events. Although he is only in Year 11, Hunter represented Damien House at our Ash Wednesday mass at the beginning of Lent. He was also a leader of the Indigenous Troup that performed at Harmony Day, has been a buddy to a new Year 7 student, volunteered to support the senior leaders in making and selling snow cones at lunch to raise money for charity, leads the House war cry, and, also supports our Junior Bombardment team at lunch breaks. He is a great leader of his PC Damien 2.
Hunter’s respect for others and his commitment to Damien House make him worthy of commendation as this week’s quiet achiever.

In Week 9 of Term one, the Damien House Senior leaders ran a Snow Cone stall to raise awareness and funds for our House charity “Share the Dignity”. 262 snow cones were sold resulting in us running out of ice. We then sold 80 zooper doopers resulting in us making $337.25 net profit. Great job.
Well done Julia B who coordinated the event and our senior team who all chipped in to set up, promote, sell products and clean up afterwards - Jalah B, Teagan L, Caeley B, Jessica K, Austin R, Mimi O, Larrissa T and Fletcher C!
Also, a big thank you to some extra Damien volunteers – Hunter L, Caleb R and Leon B who all chipped in. There were plenty more Damien students who came along to help but we had so many volunteers they weren’t needed.
Share the Dignity was established to support girls and women who need essential sanitary products, but because of their circumstance are unable to access these necessities. After purchasing a snow cone, students were able to select where they would prefer to have their donation spent to support the charity. This included purchasing tampons and pads for women and girls, toothpaste and brushes, maternity products, soaps, and shampoos.

Interschool Debating Competition
Last week three teams of Shalom students successfully participated in the first round of the Bundaberg Interschool Debating competition.
For most speakers this was their very first attempt at a formal debate. Their topics were challenging, but encouraged creative thinking. For the combined Year 7/8 team the topic was: That the opinions of youth should be central to solving youth crime. The Year 7/8 team argued the negative case against a team from Kepnock State High. Both the Year 9 and Year 10 teams spoke on the topic: That careers are a dead concept. The Year 9 team argued the negative case against a team from Bundaberg Christian College, while the Year 10 team argued the affirmative case against St Luke’s Anglican College.
Both the Year 7/8 team and the Year 9 won their round and the Year 10 team put up an impressive performance against the very experienced team from St Luke’s. All the debaters received valuable feedback from the adjudicators and are busily preparing for the next round of the competition which will take place in Week 3.

Year 8 - Term 2
Welcome to the Japanese Department for Term two. In this article, we will be discussing the Year 8 Japanese curriculum and what students can expect to learn this Term.
In Year 8 Japanese, students explore the language and cultural practices related to sharing personal information about oneself and one's family. This includes learning about the language and behaviour that is appropriate for different types of relationships between speakers. By understanding these cultural nuances, students gain a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture and the importance of language in building relationships.
Throughout the term, students continue to develop their language skills, with a focus on Hiragana and eight new Kanji characters with a in-depth study of Katakana. They learn how to use these characters in written and spoken communication, as well as in the context of exploring cities and towns in Japan, particularly Kyoto. Students also learn how to describe local attractions, features, experiences, and activities in Japanese.
All of these topics are explored within the theme of Japanese Yookai, which refers to supernatural creatures and spirits from Japanese folklore. By engaging with this theme, students gain an appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Japan and its impact on modern Japanese society.
At our school, we believe that languages are a key component of global citizenship and enable communication in our increasingly interconnected world. By studying Japanese, students gain a deeper understanding of the linguistic and cultural diversity of the world and its people.
We are proud of the hard work and dedication that our Year 8 students put into their Japanese studies and look forward to seeing their continued growth and success in the language.
Year 8 Students in Term 1 enjoying a Sushi Donut party for their hard work and early submissions of their assignments.
Year 10 - Recap of Term 1
Last Term the Year 10 Japanese class had an exciting, educational experience with their sushi train visit, which served as the culmination activity of their term-long study of Japanese language and culture. This event provided an opportunity for the students to put their knowledge of Japanese customs and etiquette to the test, while also indulging in some delicious sushi.
The students were able to enjoy a wide variety of sushi dishes, such as nigiri, maki, and sashimi. As they sampled each dish, they were encouraged to appreciate the texture and flavor of the sushi, as well as the cultural significance behind each ingredient.
Through this sushi train visit, the students gained a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and traditions. They learned about the importance of showing respect for the sushi chef, how to use chopsticks properly, and how to appreciate the artistry and beauty of sushi. They also gained an appreciation for the complexity and delicacy of Japanese cuisine.
Overall, the sushi train visit was a great success and an excellent way for the Year 10 Japanese class to celebrate the culmination of their study of Japanese culture and language. The experience left the students feeling more knowledgeable and culturally aware.
Did you know you can use the paper from the disposable chopsticks as a stand to avoid germs?
Here are some examples of how to fold the paper.
L-R: Scrunch like a prawn, The Stand, Fold as a Ribbon
The Japan Club's end of Term one celebrations included a fun origami workshop where members learned to fold traditional Japanese paper crafts. The event was topped off with delicious treats such as Japanese apple candy and Panda cookies. The club members had a great time bonding over their shared loved for Japanese culture and enjoyed the festive atmosphere with lots of Japanese music.

Somerset Storyfest 2023
The English Faculty/Library joint 'Literary Committee' successfully led 48 excited year 11 and 12 Literature/General English students to the Gold Coast in the last week of term one.
The Shalom students were complimented on their behaviour and presentation so congratulations to them for their brilliant conduct.
Thank you also to our adventurous teachers Louise Hume, Jo-Ann Thomson, and George Church for accompanying the students.
Special mention to the fabulous Fleur Wooldridge for her superb organisational skills. Fleur picked up from where Kim Toll left off at the end of last year, a big thank you to Kim also for all her work with the preliminary planning.
We already know that literacy is vital for the development of a child’s vocabulary, and of course basic language skills profoundly affect their opportunities in life. Did you also know that engaging in reading creates warm emotional bonds that can last a lifetime and influence development in other areas, like ethical standards, attitude, creativity and innovative thinking, open-mindedness, and positive societal interactions.
Programs such as the Somerset Storyfest promote engagement on another level, hearing the conversations between the students about meeting their literary heroes and sounding almost star-struck is wonderful. Professional writers imparting their knowledge and sharing their enthusiasm for the written word with the next generation will only help to augment their interest.

AFL National Development Championships
Congratulations to HPP student Zoe S who played for the Brisbane Lions Academy at 2023 AFL National Development Championships - U16 Girls. Zoe plays in the midfield.
The Lions Academy played against GWS, Tasmania, Gold Coast, Northern Territory and Sydney Swans. The Vics, SA and WA are in another pool.
With a lot of time, effort and travel involved, this is an outstanding achievement, firstly being selected, then continuing with training in Brisbane and then representing the Lions team, in these holidays.
Well done and congrulations Zoe!!

Australian Rowing Championships 2023
Jada C had a wonderful oppportunity competing in Perth at the Australian Rowing Championships during the last week of Term one. She gained great experience and had to race in some intense weather conditions. One day it was so cold, windy and rough, rowing was suspended. Throughout the ten, 2 km races, Jada competed in during the week, she finished 6th in her E final. Jada represented Shalom well and should be very proud of her achievements considering she is in Year 10 and was rowing against girls in Year 11 and 12 in the Open School Girls Single Scull section.
Super effort Jada! Bring on 2024.

National Surf Rescue Championships
Congratulations to SILVER Medalists Lizzie P, Harriet M and Amelia W who represented Bundaberg Surf Club in the Under 17s Surf Patrol Team competition at the National Surf Rescue Championships held at Trigg Beach in Perth, WA.

The team did a 20-question theory paper, a team swim, a tube rescue, a 4-person resuscitation and a 15-minute patrol scenario which involved an aggressive male who ended up putting a stake through his foot and had an angina attack, a suspected sea snake bite, two annoying people and a boarder continually being in the patrol area.

Table Tennis Final - Term 1 School Sport Recap
On Monday 26 March, Shalom took on Bundaberg State High 1 in the Table Tennis grand final. Both teams brought talented players to the game, and a close competition was ensured.
Lincoln confirmed his status as a quality player by winning all three of his match ups, and only losing one game to Bundaberg SHS’s top ranked player.
Christina won two of her match ups – one match in three games, the other match in two (with one game going to 15/13). Some very tight competition!
Isaac played gallantly and performed well, but was unable to secure a win in his matches.
The final result was extremely close with both teams winning 10 games each, however Shalom claimed the title winning five matches to four.
Thanks to our players: Lincoln, Christina and Isaac for their efforts throughout the season; Jessica who also played well throughout, but was unavailable for the final; and Elijah who participated with great spirit in his first season playing for Shalom, and admirably volunteered to fill in when there were gaps in other teams.
We look forward to more players joining in the next school sport season.

Ten Pin Bowling - Senior Summer Sport
Shalom has had a very successful summer season with a team of one player - Thomas B. Thomas has had his best season in four years and continues to hone his bowling skills.
He achieved some personal bests this season. He increased his average across the season from 94 – 110 pins and achieved his highest game score of 146. Thomas took home two trophies on our finals afternoon.
Highest Game (handicap) – 246 pins
Interschool Team winner (handicap) – Shalom College.
Thomas has placed the Shalom team in a great position at the top of both the scratch and handicap Interschool competition for 2023. It will be up to the juniors in Term three to try and hold onto that position.
