In the late 1980s, three members of the Shalom community were the Larsen boys – Andrew, Simon and Marty. The boys were three of eight kids in the Larsen household! Not often schools get triplets, but the Larsen boys made their mark here. I got to know the three of them when they moved to Nudgee College as Boarders about 1989. I remember the three of them being great kids who contributed positively to the College. I lost track of them, as you do, in the following years but knew that of the three, Marty went on to become a teacher. He enjoyed teaching and working with young people but felt called to something different and decided to start the journey to become a Catholic Priest. Marty came back to Bundy as a part of his training for a short stint and was ordained a priest ten years ago in Brisbane. Fr Marty was a great priest. He was positive and outgoing and genuinely enjoyed engaging with the community. His positive outlook on life, faith, people and the world made him very popular in the communities in which he ministered.
Really tragically, a few weeks ago, Fr Marty suffered a medical episode and died a few days later in the PA Hospital. He was 48 years old. At his funeral in Brisbane, he was remembered by family, friends, students, parishioners and colleagues as a warm priest who had a ‘great sense of fun and a wonderful spirituality’.
Fr Marty’s life was tragically cut short, but he made a difference. He lived for others which was something I noticed in him as a very young man at school. His family’s loss is huge and our prayer and support go out to them. The Church I love has lost a great priest at a time when we so need ministers of the Gospel who display a ‘great sense of fun and a wonderful spirituality’. Shalom does not have too many past students who are priests but we are very proud to be able to claim Marty and his brothers as ‘Shalommies’. We will be a good school if we keep graduating young men and women who have a commitment to leave the world a lot better than they found it – just as Marty did. May a loving God hold him and his wonderful family, close.
Our Parents & Friends meet tomorrow night (Tuesday May 7) at 5.00pm in the College staff room. All are welcome.
Libby Tricket – Gold Medal Olympian at Shalom – please consider supporting this event on the evening of Monday May 13. Libby will have a great message for all and particularly our young people. The booking link is: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1216855

Goal Setting
This year students across years 7 – 12 are using Trackone to set goals for all their subjects. I hope your student has come home and shared this news and discussed with you the goals they have set for themselves around their learning.
Year 10 Information
Last week in PDE most of our Year 10 students completed the registration process for their myQCE Student Portal Account. For those students absent or on camp Mrs Norris will be in touch in the coming week to assist the students with this process.
Year 12 Alternate Venue - External Examinations
QCAA envisage that all our Year 12 students will sit their scheduled external examinations at Shalom College. These exams run from Monday 21 October – Tuesday 12 November. The exam timetable will be released by QCAA later this term.
If there is any exceptional circumstance as to why your child cannot complete their QCAA external exams here at the College, please contact Mrs Norris as soon as possible to discuss this. It is a requirement of QCAA that an alternate venue must be identified so that extraordinary arrangements can be made ahead of time. We are required to apply to QCAA ahead of time for this arrangement.
It is important to note that all students must sit their scheduled external assessments. If a student does not sit an external assessment, they will not receive a final result for the subject and will impact their QCE credit.

Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block. These expectations are outlined in the attached documents.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.
SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

Mass with Children
Last Sunday we had our first Mass with Children at St Patrick’s Church at 9 am. There were quite a lot of families in attendance which was lovely to see. Thank you to our Shalom singers, Charlotte and Vivienne who led the congregation in singing. Vivienne also sang the Psalm beautifully. Students from all our Catholic schools were involved in the Readings, Prayer of the Faithful and taking up the gifts.
Fr Don’s homily was a dialogue with the children which worked very well and they were happy to be involved.
If you have a young person, Primary or High School, who would like to be involved in some way, whether reading, singing or taking up the gifts, please let your school know.
We will be having a Mass with Children on the fourth Sunday of every month and everyone is invited.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.
Wednesday 8 May Mrs Harmen's 11 RAE B & D
Wednesday 15 May Ms Glasspool's 10 RE A & H
Wednesday 22 May Mrs O'Driscoll's 10 RE B & C
Also, if you would like to join in other Parish services, the Catholic Parish of Bundaberg advertises Mass times at https://www.bundabergcatholic.net.au/mass-prayer/

The Year 7 & 10 students that returned a signed and completed consent card in term 1 will be vaccinated next week (week 5) on Monday 13 May & Tuesday 14 May (note, due to large number of Year 7 students this clinic is now over two days). Tuesday 14 May is the Year 10s.
The vaccinations will be conducted by a team of authorised and registered nurses from OzCare in Loyola. Any questions regarding the immunisation program needs to be directed to Ozcare please phone 41 308979.
Parents are encouraged to ensure their children have breakfast on the morning of the vaccination.
Ozcare will contact all guardians directly if a student (with a completed and returned consent form) did not attend the Shalom clinic session. Monday 20 May is catch up day for all students in Year 7 and 10 who were away the previous week.
For further information about the School Immunisation Program please call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) or visit www.health.qld.gov.au/immunisation or click on the following link; immunisation through the school program
Each Head of House will be looking to develop leadership and teamwork with the students in their own house in each of their Camps. I know they look forward to this time each year.
Reminder that there are no phones on camp for obvious reasons but if students need to check in at home, then the Chaverim phone can be used.
Parents - Please go to Parent Lounge and accept your child’s Camp and update any medical details. We ask parents to do this because we print out each students medical details and put in a folder for each Head of House.

McCormack’s quiet achiever for this term is year 8 student Oscar Q. Oscar is always happy to help out whenever asked and always has a smile on his face. If Oscar sees rubbish around the school he is quick to pick it up and place it in a bin. He is a polite young man who always has time for a chat and is working very hard in each lesson. Oscar is an asset to McCormack, and it is great to see him continuing to flourish here at Shalom. I would also like to add a special mention to all our new McCormack students that have joined us this year from various places around Australia. I know transitioning into a new school can be tough but all our new students have fit in nicely within the culture of McCormack and that is great to see. As always, GO MCCORMACK.

2024 FIA Karting Academy Trophy
Congratulations to Ky B for his achievements while competing in France at the opening round of the 2024 FIA Karting Academy Trophy on the weekend.
Ky showed true grit and determination to claim a top six finish.
After being forced to start from the rear of the grid for three heat races following a qualifying penalty, he showed speed and maturity to continually manoeuvre his way towards the front of the field to ensure he made the 36 kart grid for the final.
He finished his heat races in 13th, 13th and 9th. Starting from 24th on the grid in the final, Ky methodically worked his way up the order and was classified sixth in the final standings.
Ky will compete in the next round held in Slovakia mid-June.

Shalom Tennis Success
The first Open Boys team of Zain A, Lachlan C, Lachlan R and Xander W, lost only one set on the day, including beating a strong St Luke’s team 5-1. This result demonstrates the talent we are so fortunate to have at Shalom with these boys playing high quality tennis throughout the day.
Edi R, Harry K, Jack H and Chase S comprised a second Open Boys team. Faced with two high quality teams, this team played some excellent tennis to remain competitive finishing third overall. With three players in first Open Boys team in Year 12, these players will carry the hopes of our Shalom Open Boys in future years.
The Year 7-9 Girls team of Amelia W, Indiannah D, Megan C, Bryana C and Harmoni M played some excellent tennis, winning the competition comfortably without losing a set. With some young players of very high quality in the team, these girls are sure to remain competitive for some time.
The first Year 7-9 Boys team saw the team of Nic C, Jack B, Jake W and Jai P winning through to the State Finals in a thriller against Discovery Christian College. The rubber came down to the last set, where Nic and Jack held their nerve to win their final doubles match. These boys are the next generation at Shalom and are all good players – a testament to the depth we currently have at Shalom.
Additionally, Shalom is fortunate to have fielded a second Year 7-9 Boys team of Gabe K, Isaac T, Kallam W, Lachlan D and Tokoko W. These boys showed some excellent skills to finish third in their division on the day – an excellent result. These boys will only continue to get better as the years progress – an exciting prospect for Shalom tennis.
The winning teams of these divisions will compete in the State to battle it out with the best schools from around Queensland. This will be a challenging event as we compete against the Schools of Excellence in Tennis from around the State, but we have the talent to be competitive.
If you wish to get involved in tennis, there are several avenues. Tennis is a Term 3 school sport, a SCASA sport on Thursday afternoons and there are tournaments such as the QSSTT that we compete in. If you are keen to be involved, feel free to contact Brendan Maher or Dan Hubbard for more information.
