Reminder - New Feedback Method - Learner Attributes
A reminder that in 2024, Shalom College has changed the way we give feedback on ‘learning attributes’ of our students to parents. Please note that the upcoming End-of-Semester Report cards will no longer show Application and Behaviour as a result.
Instead, teachers will give feedback through Sia on the learning behaviours of students in each of their classes, as well as PC classes. This will be published to parents at the end of Week 5 in Term 1 & 3 for all Yr 7-12 subjects and PC classes, and at the end of Week 5 in Term 2 & 4 for the Yr7/8 rotation subjects that occur in those terms.
Each student will be awarded either a Consistently (4), Mostly (3), Sometimes (2), Rarely (1) or Never (0) in the following criteria:
- Organisation - punctual to class, correct equipment in good working order, laptop charged, record book present
- Application - actively engaged in learning, appropriate use of technology (laptop, phone etc), homework complete
- Presentation - uniform worn appropriately, follows school guidelines for hair, make-up, jewellery etc
- College Values - treats others with dignity and respect, displays a positive attitude
This will appear on Sia Parent Dashboard under ‘Grades’.
and will appear as a mark out of 16.
More detailed information can be found by clicking on the ‘Learning Attributes’ link on the above screen.
After the initial feedback is published, teachers are able to update these criteria and re-publish them to parents at any time throughout the year and add a comment if necessary. Parents are advised of updates via Notifications in Sia. In this way, reporting on your child’s application in class is ‘live’, improving the quality of feedback for parents. We believe this is a significant improvement in our communication with parents, compared with the previous ‘point-in-time’ reporting.

Laudato si’ Week and our Eco-Challenges
To begin Laudato si Week, staff participated in professional learning with Alice Carwardine, the national co-ordinator of Catholic Earthcare. The session helped staff to build their understanding of integral ecologies and the theological need to respond to the environmental crisis, both individually and as a school. Throughout last week we set eco-challenges that included recycling our pizza boxes and batteries, turning off lights and fans in unused classrooms and downloading the Recycle Mate app. We are also encouraging students to bring plastic free lunches as a small but worthwhile contribution. All these challenges can continue and become habits in our school. For example, if you have old batteries at home, please continue to send them into IT for recycling.
Edmund Rice Camp Volunteers - Year 11 & 12
The annual Eddie Rice Camp runs from 23 to 26 September, during the school holidays. We are currently looking for Year 11 and Year 12 students to volunteer as Big Buddies on camp. They will be joined by our past students who return each year to facilitate the camp in partnership with Edmund Rice Community Services. Students give up part of their holidays to help run the camp, and although it is tiring, they find the experience very rewarding. If a student missed the information and sign-up opportunity last week, they can contact Mr Michael Bundesen or Mrs Sandra Freeman to express their interest
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.

2024 Catholic Schools Race Day Report
Our 19th Annual Catholic Schools Race Day, held on Saturday 16 March at Thabeban Park Race Course was another great success. All tickets into our Marquee area, capped at 350 were sold. This year’s theme, Celestial Celebration certainly created extra sparkle to the day with many attendees dressed accordingly to add to the day’s atmosphere. The weather conditions are always a challenge and this year being windy and warm, didn’t hamper the festivities.
The afternoon kicked off with the Fashions Parade hosted again this year by the ladies from Sanshells Boutique Bargara and Vo Vo’s Boutique Bundaberg. The ladies put on a great show and were applauded loudly by the very appreciative crowd.
Everyone in our marquee who were dressed according to our theme were automatic entrants into our annual Pam Hansen Fashion Awards and the winners were very happy to be rewarded for their special effort in adding sparkle to their attire.
The marquee’s atmosphere was also enhanced by the talented artists on the stage performing their versions of popular songs in the background throughout the day.
Food and drinks were in plentiful supply. The fantastic team of volunteers from Shalom Catering again supplied a tasty range of nibbly treats throughout the day. This team have been doing this for fifteen years now and they always deliver the highest quality food and at a very low cost. This year they were again assisted with the generosity of Dominos Pizzas with their donation of 50 pizzas to compliment the range produced by the Shalom Team. The volunteer team behind the bar and selling drink tickets again did a fantastic job ensuring attendees were served their favourite thirst quencher in a speedy manor.
Another major feature of the day and a great contributor to the money raised for the day is our raffle. Over $8,000 in raffle prizes were donated by our generous sponsors and $4,200 worth of tickets were sold on the day. This was a great result considering that despite our marquee being sold out, the crowd in the General Public arena of the Race Club, where we sell many tickets usually, was well down on numbers in comparison to recent years. An enormous amount of work by members of our committee went into getting this pool of prizes together from the many extremely generous donors.
The money raised on the day, $20,000+, added to a little left over from last year has enabled us to distribute $7,000 to each of our three Primary Schools. St. Joseph’s is allocating their funds to the purchase of new outdoor learning tables for the Prep and Year 1 Classrooms. St Patrick’s funds are going towards new outdoor seating for the new prayer space which is being built during the next school holidays and St. Mary’s are purchasing a container to house their playground equipment.
As a committee, it is so wonderful to see the money raised go to such valuable causes, especially in the assistance annually to the enhancement of the education of our Primary School students. Thanks also to Shalom for giving their share to the Primary Schools.
Finally, I’d like to thank everyone who were involved in the event, Committee, Sponsors, Volunteer Teachers, Staff and Students and Parents. This annual Catholic Schools event is an enjoyable day on our calendar, and we are already looking forward to next year’s event scheduled for Saturday 15 March 2025. It will be our 20th annual event so special effort will be going into creating a great reunion for all past and present Committee, Volunteers, Sponsors, and attendees.

CQUniversity Business Challenge 2024
On Wednesday 22 May, Shalom College students competed in the annual CQUniversity Business Challenge.
Students were hosted by the university at the Bundaberg campus and this year we had three teams of four students representing Shalom. All students are studying one or more of our senior subjects - Business, Legal Studies and/or Accounting – and were accompanied by their Business Department teachers, Mrs Revelo, Mr McMah and Mrs Ingle.
The challenge was run across five CQU campuses with 43 teams from 25 Queensland high schools. Teams competed simultaneously in the discipline area quizzes which were focused on content from the QCAA senior syllabuses and general knowledge.
This year our Team 1 were runners-up for the Bundaberg and Wide Bay region with Teams 2 and 3 also being competitive. The change of format for 2024 means we do not progress to the final, but we are already looking forward to competing again in 2025.
Well done to all of the Shalom students who took part and we are grateful for the support CQUniversity continues to offer our students in this competition
If you are in Year 7 - 10 and would like to participate in the great opportunity, please email Mrs Bishop by Wednesday 29 May.
The Junior Science Olympiad Exam is designed to take science students in years 7 to 10 to the next level.
• Junior Science Olympiad Years 9 & 10 Wednesday 12 June 2024
• Junior Science Olympiad Years 7 & 8 Friday 14 June 2024
The exam is based on general science content (biology, chemistry and physics) and assumes students have a good knowledge of the Australian Curriculum – Science up to a Year 10 level. Some questions in the exam may also involve higher-level content (such as might be encountered by an extended Year 10 student). A range of analysis questions will also be included for which any necessary extra information is provided.
Exams are two-hours long and are completed all online. Students can only sit one exam level.
All students sitting the same exam must do so at the same time, under normal exam conditions and supervision.
Students will receive a certificate indicating their grade based on their exam performance. Students that perform exceptionally well, and are eligible, may receive invitations to future science extension programs and activities hosted by Australian Science Innovations.
All students who wish to be considered for JSO Spring School and selection on the team representing Australia at the International Junior Science Olympiad must sit our JSO Exam.

On Wednesday 22 May we sent our junior team (year 7 & 8) accompanied by Ms Karen Lyons, off to Rosedale to battle it out in the 2024 Regional Reader’s Cup Competition. Our little team came in at a very respectable 5th place in a field of 10 teams – well done team and thank you Ms Lyons!
Cara M, Chloe A, Jessica H, & Paige K.
The Reader’s Cup Competition was introduced in 2004 to celebrate 50 years of the Childrens’ Book Council of Australia in Queensland. Originally, it catered for Years 6-8 as a single competition then later split into two sections of 6/7 and 8/9. As Year 7 transitioned into high school in 2015 the competition changed to 5/6 and 7/8. In 2017 a Year 9-10 competition was added in the Wide Bay Region and from 2020 there is a state final held in all three sections.
Teams of four to five students together read a set of nominated books, and then compete with other teams to answer quiz questions from the books. Winners from regional competitions then compete in a state final.
Literary programs such as Readers Cup encourage engagement with the written word and develop a love of reading, challenge students to read widely, and work collaboratively in a team. The Readers Cup Competition also allows readers to compete at a regional and state level like sporting competitions and to meet other students with a similar passion for books.

CHESS NEWS
“Life is a kind of Chess, with struggle, competition, good and ill events” (Benjamin Franklin)
For the first time, Shalom hosted the Inter-School Chess Competition on Wednesday 22 May – an honour and privilege for our school. Teams from most primary and secondary schools in Bundaberg and the wider district came from far and wide to participate, with the Sports Centre filled with approximately 130 chess enthusiasts. Shalom entered an impressive six teams on the day, the largest of any school, and produced some excellent results.
Shalom’s top-rated team, Shalom Black (Callum M, Seth G, Max C and Luke R) who received a team silver medal in the Premier Division, missing the gold by a heartbreaking 0.5 points.
Shalom also fielded two other teams in the Premier Division developing our talent against tougher opposition. Shalom Red (Nicota F, Jacob B, Mason C, Zach G) and Shalom White (Leo W, Cannon Z, Jonathon E, Alex C) demonstrated our depth of talent, with each player scoring their share of wins, in some cases against much older opponents – a remarkable feat.
Shalom fielded three teams in the Secondary Division, with all players showing their skills. Although missing out on a medal, the Shalom Blue team of William M, Rowel F, Quaid B and Eli B finished very close with each player performing well. The next generation teams of Shalom Yellow (Jai P, Baxter W, Hugh M, Tyler K) and Shalom Green (Derick H and Noah B) are showing continued improvement and will be a force to be reckoned with in coming years.
Individually, Shalom also had some excellent results, with Callum receiving a silver medal in the Premier Division for the second time this year showing his amazing talent in this game. Rowel F, Tyler K and Will M also received merit ribbons for winning most of their games – well done boys!
If you are interested in playing or learning chess, then you are more than welcome to join us at chess club on Tuesdays at 11.25am-12.00pm in Beerarlem. The more the merrier! You can find more information about Shalom Chess on our Chess Group Page (https://schoolbox.shalomcollege.com/homepage/6024)

ROWING
ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT 15KM DOWN THE BURNETT RIVER
On Sunday 19 May, 35 Shalom rowers made history with the Bundaberg Rowing Club first ever Pressler-Brown 15km Time Trial. Rowers had to row from the Rowers Club 15km downstream to the Port Marina. We set out in junior, senior, girls, boys, mixed and composite crews in six quads, four doubles & one single. Despite the nerves the rowers smashed it with most crews finishing in just over an hour. Results were so close with only 1 minute between crews on the finish line.
Overall, we finished with 4 x 1st, 3 x 2nd, 2 x 3rd & 2 x 4th. All the rowers hopped off the water smiling & sharing their triumphs so definitely a popular event to add to the Rowing Calendar for next year. Thank you to all the coaches and parents that helped out to make this event a success. We appreciate all your support.
