This Sunday is ‘Fathers’ Day’. I hope all of us who are dads have a goal of being a better dad to our children than our own fathers were to us. It is such a terrifyingly crucial role in our society. Lots of people, other than biological fathers, choose or are invited to step into that role for countless young people. Australian psychotherapist Steve Biddulph – author of the seminal 1997 book Raising Boys – has thought about these issues for almost 40 years, and he describes a sorrow for lost contact and love that boys and girls have for ‘absent fathers’ as, “father hunger”, a term first coined by Jungian writers.
“Role modelling is the way the human brain learns almost all complex behaviours, attitudes and skills, and so boys need to know good men close up. All of us are a bundle of the good people, male and female, we have known. But we have let that enrichment disappear on the male side, and many boys today have never seen what a good man looks like close up.”
“When I meet with groups of young dads,” Biddulph tells me, “I conduct a survey and the results are always the same. About 30 per cent of men report that they don’t even speak to their fathers. Their relationship is non-existent. Another 30 per cent have a somewhat prickly or difficult relationship. They do sometimes spend time with their father, but it’s a painful and awkward time. Around another 30 per cent fare somewhat better – they visit their father or phone him regularly, show up for family get-togethers, go through the motions of being a good son, and yet discuss nothing deeper than lawnmowers. Fewer than 10 per cent of men are friends with their father and see the relationship as deep and sustaining. Only about one man in 10 says, ‘My father is fantastic. He’s an emotional backstop in my world.’”
“A father’s absence from his daughter’s life has been found in research to increase her chances of risky sexual behaviour, experiencing teen pregnancy, doing poorly in school. For sons, it prevents them from seeing the fullness of what it means to be a man. There is no access to the interior world of male feeling,” he says. “There’s been a vast improvement in this over the past 20 years because of how much time fathers are now devoting to their children. But generations of men have carried the legacy of this gaping hole.”
All dads and those who step into that role for our daughters and sons need support and encouragement to deal with the day to day challenges and opportunities of the role. Tickets are still available for our breakfast this Thursday 31 August with Darius Boyd at The Waves Sports Club. All are welcome to come along and be encouraged on this journey.

This Friday is a Student Free Day at Shalom. Learner Conferences will take place for the Year 7 and 8 Core Studies classes. There will be no classes for all year levels.
Organ Donation will be highlighted with our Year 11 & 12 students during the next House Assembly with a specialist nurse from the Base Hospital coming to talk to them. The importance of this very worthy cause and the process to register to be an organ donor will be explained to the students. For more information, follow the link via www.donatelife.gov.au or the Medicare app). You can join the register from 16 years of age – this is a vital conversation to have in your homes. Shalom Day
Last week on Thursday 24 August we celebrated Shalom Day. This is the day we stop each year and recognise how lucky we are and celebrate all things ‘Shalom’. This year we welcomed back our Grandparents to morning tea, something that we had ceased during the pandemic. We were glad that they could come and join us once again.
Activities during the day included a Liturgy, talent show and a house dance competition.
Grandparents joined us for the student-led liturgy, before we shared cake and listened to music by the college jazz band. The talent show this year showcased our students who bravely put their hands up to perform. The audience was enthusiastic. The talent show spilled out onto the lunch break, with staff continuing the performance.
The final event of the day, the annual House Dance Competition, was fought out between the ten houses. Walsh ended up victorious this year, very closely followed by Hogan and then Rice. All students participate in this competition, and it is great to see everyone giving it their best.
Class Masses
Each Religious Education class is allocated to a Wednesday morning 8am Mass in Loyola Chapel. The class, along with another, co-hosts this Parish Mass by taking the roles of readers and processors. When your student has an upcoming class Mass, you will receive a notification or an invitation to attend. We warmly welcome all to this weekly joint Parish School celebration. The Year 8 classes will be hosting over the next few weeks:
• Wednesday 30 August Mrs O'Driscoll's 8.5 & 8.8
• Wednesday 6 September Mr Sheehan's 8.0 & 8.4
• Wednesday 13 September Mr Blinco's 8.2 and Mrs Somerfield's 8.7

Ambah K is this weeks quiet achiever for Walsh house. She is super quiet and polite, she sits in PC and asks questions to start a conversations with her peers. If we ever have a PC activity, Ambah always participates well.
Ambah’s attendance at school is quite good and the results for her subjects demonstrate she tires very hard to have success. Her favourite subjects are Dance and Music where she has excelled. Ambah has participated heavily in cultural events for the college such as; ANAC day, Band, Choir and Orchestra to name a few.
Outside of school, Ambah works part time as well as managing time for her dance and music practice in between doing her school work.
Ambah is a polite and respectful student who is often overlooked. Ambah is quite literally a QUIET achiever.

At lunch Mr Church ran a fun treasure hunt with literature-inspired clues to fruit and vegetable items in keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’. These were then presented at the library for an entry into a draw for tuck-shop vouchers.
At afternoon teatime all week, the library ran; badge making, pot painting and planting, bookmark and book cover design, pet rock painting, and flower making.

Congratulations to Mr Tucker for taking out the Outstanding Teacher of STEM Award at the recent Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence.
The Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in STEM Education recognise students, teachers, support officers, schools and education partners (volunteers, mentors and organisations) who demonstrate an outstanding and innovative contribution to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education in Queensland.
Mr Tucker was the only award winner from the Bundaberg region.
Mr Tucker said one of the most rewarding experiences was seeing that light bulb moment experienced in real time.
“Watching students grow in knowledge and confidence is a terrific privilege and is the drive behind my continued passion for teaching,” he said.
“I find STEM very exciting. I never know exactly what a project will produce at the end, and the students never cease to amaze me with their unique view of the world.”
“Without the support of the leadership team at Shalom College, the resources and opportunities would not be there for the students, and I would not be able work on the STEM programs.
“So, this award is very much a reflection of that school support, and I am very conscious of that.
“Winning this award is also an opportunity to show our school community that there are meaningful STEM opportunities available to our students.
“To be acknowledged from outside of the school and the school community gives greater weight to the positive STEM outcomes at Shalom College.”
Congratulations again to Mr Tucker!
Dance Star National Championships
The Senior Dance Performance Team and junior team member, Year 9 student Sienna J recently returned from a very rewarding trip to Adelaide for the Dance Star National Championships. This 5 day event saw the best of the best from schools across QLD, NSW, VIC and SA come together to compete for the title of National Champion in their respective sections. To qualify for this event was a huge achievement, making it through two rounds of competitions to get there, a regional qualifier in April, followed by the QLD State Finals in June.
The team’s results were beyond incredible, representing our State and School with pride and bringing home 14 medals in total! An exceptional achievement for any school, particularly Shalom in its first year in the competition. It was a wonderful experience, performing amongst the best of the best at a fantastic venue - the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, and spending time together, seeing the sights of Adelaide. A rewarding experience that won’t be forgotten any time soon.

Year 11 UQ Science Ambassadors
Science week was celebrated during the week of Monday 14 – Friday 18 August. At Shalom College we held two celebrations at school. The theme for this year was Innovation: Powering Future Industries.
Shalom lunch time activity:
On Tuesday 15 August we celebrated science week with several fun activities out on the lawn with all students welcome to attend. The activities included a paper plane challenge, decorating cookies, binary code keychains and a brain break quiz with fantastic prizes. Students were also invited to write down their most innovative idea. Some crazy ideas were proposed:
- A biodegradable lip balm container that has a seed that can be grown into a plant
- Being able to talk to animals
- A machine to clone people
- Trees that can move - instead of being cut down they can get up and walk away
Overall everyone had a lot of fun, and ate a lot of cookies.
Wednesday Primary School Visits:
On Wednesday 16 August the Year 11 UQ Science Ambassador students hosted two primary schools. In period one, twenty-four St Joseph’s Year 6 six students attended and in period two, sixty-five very eager Year three and four students attended activities showcasing experiments in the science laboratories.
The experiments included: Making Elephant’s toothpaste, Flying teabags, Flame tests and Lava lamps to name a few. This provided students with an opportunity to embrace their science ambition. It encouraged them to explore science in the real world through hands on activities. We received the following enthusiastic feedback from these curious little science ambassadors.

Shalom College Equestrian Fraser Coast Interschool 2023
Congratulations to the Shalom College Equestrian Team who competed at the Fraser Coast Interschool Equestrian Competition in Maryborough from Tuesday 22 to Thursday 24 August. This event is open to school-aged riders and draws students from around the State. Our team this year included Isobel C, Tahlia C, Mahli P, Caitlin C, Madi W and Meghan F. All of these students were wonderful competitors, and supporters of each other and riders from other schools.
Our team members competed in hacking, dressage, sporting, western and showjumping events over the three days with many placings. We would like to send out a huge thank you to the wonderful parents and caregivers who took the students, their horses and, for many, their camping equipment to the event. It is a big effort for all of them to plan for and attend these events. Well done to everyone involved.

Congratulations Taylor D. Taylor spent the last couple of days at the Brisbane Broncos, with NRLW Broncos Head Coach Scott Prince, coaching staff and the team.
She got to spend some time with the coaches and players, tour of the grounds and facilities as well as watch how they train and prepare for game day.
The team played on Sunday at Total Workwear stadium in Brisbane against the Canberra Raiders winning 40-8.
